Let's run this around once more now that the cruises are only a couple of weeks away! YIKES!!!
8) Hi guys.....
Booked on Holland America Line's Volendam for two back-to-back cruises: a week from Vancouver, BC to Alaska departing on 20 September 2006.....then staying onboard, departing from Vancouver on 27 September 2006 south through the Panama Canal and on to Fort Lauderdale (17 days).
Anyone else thinking of booking on one or both of these cruises? If you are, it might be fun to anticipate together through these forums, emails, etc. Of course, the real thrill would be to meet onboard for a drink, chat or whatever we choose. Couples, singles, ANYONE is sure welcome!
Me: I retired recently from a 30-year career as a Naval officer. (So what does any good Navy boy do after "retirement"? He goes back to sea! But, now, to play, not work!) Will be doing some freelance writing to supplement my income.....otherwise enjoying a great life even more! (I can't believe I'm "retired" from anything...still feel like a kid, at heart, and am in excellent health and great shape -- all that sea air, you know!)
You will enjoy the trip thru to Panama Cannal. I am also a retired Naval Officer (Subs & Destroyers) and made the full cannal transit last Spring fallowed by a back to back of the Eastern Carabbean onboard the Dawn Princess. This was the best trip that I have made. I also stayed three days in a great guest house in Fort Lauderdale which I highly recommend. If I remember, the name of the hotel was The Elyisum, or something like that.
I have cruised on 12 ships in the past 2 1/2 years. I guess I just love the sea without standing those port and starboard bridge watches. Had Command of the USS Agerholm (DD-826) back in the Vietnam era.
I remember the Agerholm! I believe it was retired shortly after I arrived in the San Diego area in 1976; one of the last of the "classic" destroyers. Greyhounds!
I also appreciate your input on the guesthouses in the Fort Lauderdale area. Belive it or not, I've been all over the world....but NEVER been to Florida! (Go figure!) Accordingly, I'm doing a lot of research to find just the right place to top-off (some pun intended!) my long Fall 2006 trip. (Looking forward to my first stay at a gay resort will certainly make it easier to leave the Volendam after 24 days at-sea.)
