Cruise Art Auctions
Last year on the Carnmival Pride there was an "art auction" offered. Looked like it was a permanent activity on the ship. Does anyone have information about this "great deal"? They were very pushy and I have learned that if something sounds to good to be true, it usually is!
Experience? Advice?

We have bought many pieces on both Carnival and RCI thru Park West Gallery. We are very satisfied with all of them and we never experienced a pushy sales person or art dealer. We enjoyed the auctions.

As most seasoned cruisemates know, an art action is not really an auction at all. It is a sale of both original art and prints of same, the price for which is set and can be purchased without the free bubbly. We enquired after a piece and were given the prices for and option of purchasing the original or a print.

But to drum up enthusiasm for the process, an auction atmosphere is utilized. Once a price is “established duplicates of the item are then offered for sale at the winning price. We have been told, and have seen for ourselves, that identical items can be purchased on line at a substantially lower price. But where’s the fun in that?

Unfortunately, there has been a sailing or two where the art auction became a highlight of the trip. Otherwise, their appreciative value is rendering the sun deck with more available lounge chairs…

It's very easy to overpay for pieces at these auctions. Just go to ebay and do a search on "park west." up will come dozens of pieces purchased at sea, and the bids will be only 1/2 to 1/3 of the price paid.

park west pushes peter max. they tout him as an investment.

i've bought an erte at a reasonable valuation, though, and i'm happy with it.
