Feet and Ankle swelling
HI, we went on our first cruise in May and both of our legs and ankles really swelled. I already take a diuretic, but they still retained water. Any ideas on why this happens on a cruise and what remedy.

Hi vawterf,

This is one of my "major" problems on a cruise (or almost any vacation!).

I also take a diuretic and have been known to take two on the last cruise days!

From what I understand, while the water on a cruise is "clean" and potable, it's still full of salt.

When you can, put your feet up above your heart. (This is NOT easy!)

I hope someone else can help both of us!

A diuretic is a pill you take, usually a prescription, that will cause you to reduce the fluid in your body. Usually by peeing alot.

My sister had this problem this year for the first time. Since you are on a diuretic already I assume that you don't eat much salt. The food on the cruises (while delicious) is full of salt. Also, if you drink alcohol that really retains fluid soda also contains alot of salt. I would definately tell you to lay down as the previous poster suggested with your feet under a few pillows. Good luck!

Drink lots of bottled water and go up to the exercise track and walk, walk, walk.

I've heard that because the water is treated (desalination of ocean water) vs. booze and food has lots of salt. Not sure really what the culprit is, but I had my worst case of feet/ankle swelling on our last cruise in February.

In addition to drinking lots of water and walking, I found doing laps in the pool and going in the jacuzzi was helpful. Also, a lounge chair is better than having your legs hanging down in an upright chair.
