Default Ambulances at Ports

I recently sailed on the Carnival Pride on a Baja Mexico cruise. When we reached port I was surprised to see ambulances at two of the four ports with people taken off the ship on stretchers. In Long Beach there were two ambulances waiting.

I wasn't aware of any problems on the ship and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Is this a common occurance?

Stuff like that happens in everyday life and at sea is no exception. In 2004 our sailaway on the Zenith was delayed out of Miami as a just embarked passenger was removed from the ship on a medical emergency before we even got underway. If the situation is not dire and the patient is not critical I imagine that those that get sick or injured are cared for onboard and taken to medical facilities at port.
