My husband & I are booked on Westerdam for January Sock Hop Cruise - anyone been on one, will it be all 50's theme thoughout the cruise or just a few daily special events? How does Westerdam compare to Royal Carrib Majesty, accomodations, food, activities, excursions, anthing else? This is our second cruise.
Westerdam is my favorite Holland America ship, a former liner with gracious public rooms, a wonderful staff (upbeat and outgoing) and very good food. A highlight was always the midnight buffet, where I frequently found Indonesian food. A HAL employee member told me that staff calls Westerdam "happy ship". It's officers and crew have been together for a long time, and are the friendliest I've found in the fleet.
Cabins are much larger than you found on Royal Caribbean. RCI normally has some of the best nightlife at sea, so you may find some weakness in this area. The atmosphere is a bit more refined onboard, but far from stuffy.
Location: Wisconsin....about 100 miles south of the Frozen Tundra and 70 miles east of Camp Randall

I am thinking of taking a cruise on westerdam in january as well. I am concerned about the weather in january. Is it warm enough to swim? What type of clothing should I pack?
