Hi, I was on the Westerdam last Christmas. She is a great (if older) ship. Everything about her was really nice, and I thought the staff was especially warm and friendly. The fact that she is not brand new makes her more like a traditional cruise ship, and less like the hugh "hotels" sailing today. I thought the food was good, and they decorated the dining room in black and white on the night of the black and white ball. I'm not sure if they do that every cruise, or just holidays. It was fun, and the officers were there to dance with us.
The room was spacious, and there was enough storage. I do not remember a built in hairdryer, so be sure to pack one if you use one. There is an extra casual resturant called the Verandah rest. and I always found the line shorter there than in the Lido. I loved the bar by the pool, give Jerry my best! Have fun!
I just returned from the Westerdam cruise through Alaska's inside passage & it was WONDERFUL! They decorated the dining room for my cruise also & I also enjoyed the Verandah. It is at the top of the ship & views are great! Entertainment & activities each evening were geared towards a little older crowd but still lots of fun.
Crew is extremely friendly, in fact a couple of them flirted outrageously—has any other single female experienced this
I've sailed three time on the Westerdam, all to Alaska. She shows her age in terms of design - the newer HAL ships have continued to improve on her features. However, she's very well maintained. Interiors are very comfortable, with a fairly quiet, country club atmosphere. Food and service very good. Excellent outdoor spaces and views. Not a party ship, but very relaxing and enjoyable.
