The answer is both. Sometimes U'll get the assignment a few weeks before, sometimes a few days before, and sometimes at the pier.
They say the longer the wait the better chance of an upgrade. I don't know about that. Think there must be a rule about not ugrading Kuki <G>
I booked outside guarantee on the Volendam to Alaska in June. About 2 weeks before we sailed, we were notified and given our cabin #. It was only 3 cabins from Aft, but on Main Deck. I wouldn't have chosen it if I'd been picking, but I told myself I'd saved quite a bit, and a cabin is just a cabin, etc. Then about 3 days later, HAL called and upgraded us to a nicer cabin, still Main deck but mid ship. Very nice location, and we couldn't have been more pleased. My TA called and wanted to know if I had called HAL and asked to change cabins, their choice was so good. Have fun!
You're right, Kuki. Just got our cabin number yesterday, much sooner than expected: sail date is 11/02. We're assigned a Cat C on lower promenade, mid ships - better than the one we selected when we booked originally, and nearly $1k less! Thanks for the feedback.
