Is there anyone on this board that knows any reason why HAL stopped sailing from the Big Apple years ago when they decided to move their offices out West?
I do know that a lot of those in the Greater NY/NJ area would like to see the return of HAL ships on a regular basis once again.
In late 1982, Holland America left the NY Metro area and relocated its operation to Seattle to be better able to concentrate their endeavours on the gowing Alaska market which is where they concentrated on building their market.
HAL did make a few brief returns to NY in the early 90's with 10-11 night cruises to Bermuda & the Caribbean and some New England-Canada cruises. HAL's absence from the NY market had more to do with not having enought onnage to spread around as the fleet is concentrated in Europe and Alaska as of late but with the addition of several new ships, that is about to change.
Amsterdam will be based in NY from August through October and the Rotterdam will be based out of NY from May through October 2002 and it is highly anticipated that Holland America will return to Bermuda in 2003.
From May 10 though August 3, 2002, the Rotterdam will be doing New England and Easten Canada cruises. The August 3 cruise will disembark in Boston. She then does a 16 day transatlantic disembarking in London and then a 17 day transatlantic disembarking in New York.
On September 12, 2002 she will again do Eastern Canada and New England cruises until October 29 when she does the Panama Canal.
