We will be staying overnight in Vancouver and are looking for an inexpensive place to stay, but close to where HAL loads. How do most people get from their hotels to the terminal? Thanks!
Last year we stayed at the Empire Landmark Hotel on Robson Street. It has fabulous views of the city. Its probably not the cheapest hotel in the City, but it is not the most expensive either. We took a short taxi ride to Canada Place where we sailed the Celebrity Mercury. I can't remember how much the taxi cost, but it wasn't more than $15 US I believe.
Go to http://www2.mybc.com/home_page.html You should be able to find a good cheap hotel. If you can get one adjacent to the Sky Train Rout Even if your out in the Burbs a bit the Waterfront Station is right at the cruise terminal. There's a bunch of hotels within two blocks of the terminal. The pan Pacific is @ the terminal, Warterfront right accross the street, Bayshore about four blocks away. There are also a lot in the Gastown area. But these are not as nice if you send me a list of those you have picked. I will let you know which to avoid. Which Ship and what date are you Sailing? Were on The Ryndam 09/21/01. If your on the same cruise we could possibly pick you up on the way down if you want to stay in New Westminster, or Burnaby. The other Alternative is to stay close to the Airport if your flying in. A Cab downtown would be a little expensive but the Shuttle bus will drop you off at the terminal.
There is no such thing as an inexpensive hotel close to Canada Place or in downtown Vancouver. The Pan Pacific is quite expensive as is the Four Seasons, although we enjoyed staying at both these hotels.
The hotels at the airport may be less expensive - the taxi ride from the airport to town & back was not that bad - not as bad as Toronto.
- lucky you DaveB - I would love to live near a cruise ship terminal and not have to fly to to get there.
Unfortunately I don't believe there are "inexpensive" hotels in Vancouver near Canada Place. I've stayed at the Pan Pacific, very expensive, and the Delta Suites, quite expensive. But, I've also stayed at a Quality Inn not too far from the airport that was clean with a nice restaurant for about $30 US. Of course, you'd have a cab ride downtown that might add $15 or so US, but still beats a downtown hotel. They had a free shuttle from the airport, too. I think I found them on vancouverhoteldeals.com. I stayed there this past March while in Vancouver for the World Figure Skating Championships, prior to checking in at Delta Suites. If you can swing it, try to spend some time in Vancouver - it's really wonderful, and one of my favorite cities. Good luck, and enjoy your cruise!
There are a variety of chains [Holiday Inn, Quality, etc] with hotels in Vancouver's downtown peninsula that are less expensive than the high-end properties adjacent to the cruise terminal. If you have limited time in Vancouver, stay downtown rather than near the airport or the 'burbs - for ease of getting around and seeing as much as you can. The key shopping areas, Stanley Park, English Bay and Granville Island are all within easy reach of any downtown hotel - with inexpensive cab rides. Enjoy your visit!
The best (not the cheapest) place to stay is the Waterfront Center (Fairmont) Hotel right across from the Canada Place Cruise Terminal. If you have (or can find) an Entertainment book, you can get the room 1/2 price. Otherwise, ask for any specials.
The nice thing about staying there is that they will take your luggage from your room to the ship for you!
And, they are absolutely the friendliest people in any hotel I've stayed at World Wide!
BC tourism offers very deep discounts. (at many hotels including the Waterfront)
All you have to do is call 1-800-helloBC.
And remember, the American dollar is so strong in Canada that you end up getting about 30% for your money on top of any discount that you may be able to find!
The Fairmont Waterfront Centre is not inexpensive, but it is wonderful. We were there during the attacks on USA. They extended our reservations as long as necessary at a greatly reduced price. This hotel is directly across the street from the pier where Holland America normally docks. We usually avoid hotel restaurants except for breakfast, opting for "local" dining. We did have one dinner at the Waterfront Centre -- outstanding meal. We had a corner room which looked out on the cruise ship dock and on the city. The tour buses all leave from directly across the street. It within walking distance of the entrance to Stanley Park. Just a short walk from Gastown and shopping on Burrard Street as well as art galleries. I would definitely return to the Fairmont Waterfront Centre.
We stayed at the Days Inn, no more than 2 blocks directly up from Canada Place going and coming.. It helped too for disembarkation, when there were lots of cab and transit strike problems in early August. We simple wheeled our bags up the two blocks.
Days Inn in Vancouver is an old European style hotel, clean with all the basics in a very good location. It cost a little over $100 US. We also recommend the sightseeing motor tour by 'The Captain" for comprehensive 3 hour orientation for Vancouver.
Probably the best reasonable quality property in Vancouver is the Sylvia Hotel, 1154 Gilford St. It's next to the main entrance to Stanley Park. You could probably walk to it without luggage, but I'd take a cab. The only problem is that it's usually fully booked, but if you have time, check it out.
