Onboard Veendam the drama was a lot less riveting. "The bridge did not see him rappelling because we were well under the bridge before he got into view," reports spokesman Erik Elvejord. In fact, officers were unaware of the incident until harbor police phoned them some 15 minutes later. At that point, Elvejord says, "we hooked up with port police and sent the first officer and the chief engineer back to take a look." There was no damage to the ship though the failed bungee jumper suffered minor head injuries. He is under custody
This guy is a total idiot - first of all, for doing the stunt in the first place, and secondly, for not even planning it right! He was shown leaving the hospital and he had a gash on his nose and a bruise on his forehead. If he had collided with a passenger, he could have killed someone.
The Lion's Gate Bridge, which is one of only two ways to get across to North
and West Vancouver, or to head up to Whistler (the road to it leads from
downtown Vancouver, through Stanley Park), was closed for hours, really
messing up traffic. This guy was actually quoted as saying that he hoped if
he had landed successfully, the cruise line would have let him stay onboard!
One comical note, one of the many letters to the editor in the local paper about this guy said
"Forget arresting wannabe stuntman Dean Sullivan for his stunt. Arrest him
and throw him in jail for that hairdo. Buddy, the mullet/hockey hairdo went
out in the 80's - that's 20 years ago. Get with the new millennium!"
