Default New Fees

In addition to charging $15 per person per meal in the Pinnacle Restaurants and limiting the menu selection in the dining room, my agent tells me that HAL will now be adding a surcharge on to certain items on the dining room menu, such as shrimp.

The food is not very good so don't get to excited about it.

I know about the Pinnacle and think having any extra-charge restaurant is fine- no one will go and pay if the food is not worth it. But what do you mean 'limiting the menu selection in the dining room'? To what? Has any of this been verified by HAL? This would hurt HAL much more than a rise in fare would.

We were on the Ryndam on the Dec 14-21 Sea of Cortez cruies and ate in the Pinnacle. As a gourmet cook myself I have to say it was well worht the $15 charge. As far as surcharges in the Main Dinning Room, I suspect the this Wilner person is a Troll that has escaped the newsgroups. If you don't know what a troll is look it up on Google. Cruising is and will continue to be a most enjoyable and reasonable way to see the world...

As a TA I checked with HAL today and was told that the fee for alternative dining has gone up on some ships and by months end would be raised on all ships to $20.00.
They had not heard anything about raising prices on shrimp and certain items. The agent and I agreed that there was know way to charge prices for certain items in the dining room.

Here is a copy of the message that HAL sent me today.

Ms. Wilner,

Thank you for your email.

The only time we will charge a surcharge for any item ie) shrimp, lobster,
etc. - is if it is not on that particular evening's menu. The surcharge
would range depending on what is ordered from $2.50 - $15.00

Kind regards,
Michele

So it is true that menu items will have a charge incurred if they are not on the menu for that particular meal.

However, Joan, what you said originally was that "HAL was adding a surcharge on to certain items ON THE MENU'. Re-read your original post. That is not true. As you say now ,they are adding a surcharge on items ordered that are NOT ON THE MENU that particular day. That's a big difference in your 2 posts.

Does anyone really think it is out of line to charge for something that is not on that night's menu but has to be prepared specially. Having been in the restaurant business I know what it would mean to have to stop the assembly line just because someone was not satisfied with that night's menu...come on....Oh well, you know the old saying about a gold rope.

Hmmm. I have found the food to be superb on the Holland Line. I am a former restaurant owner and a gourmet cook. What are your credentials Mrs. Barnes?

I have been on 9 cruises and the food on Holland America was lousy and on more than one meal the hair found in food made everyone at our table end their meals before finishing meal.

One more time- people are NOT emailing you personally! You checked the forum box to have all replies on this thread sent to your personal email BY THE CRUISEMATES FORUM. It is done automatically by the forum itself, not by the poster. Didn't we go through this explanation before???

MRS. BARNES - I'M SHOUTING AT YOU! (typing in upper case means that)

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RECEIVE E-MAILS, WHY IS IT THAT WHEN I CLICK ON YOUR NAME AN E-MAIL ADDRESS (YOURS I PRESUME) COMES UP?

I SUGGEST YOU CHECK OUT YOUR PROFILE AND MAKE APPROPRIATE CHANGES.

When you've accomplished that, perhaps you will tell us where you get your information re additional fees.

To me that seems fair and reasonable! A SURCHARGE IT IS NOT!

You want something special, you pay for it. Using an Alternate Dining Room is also special so you pay for it! It's your decision!

I am glad you posted the whole email you received. As I have been repeatedly trying to explain to you to no avail, if you look at the middle of the email you just posted you will clearly see it was sent to you by the Holland America cruise forum, not by the poster himself. Bkrewson sent it to the forum and BECAUSE YOU CHECKED THE EMAIL BOX the forum sent it on to you. The forum is sending you each and every post put on this forum thread because you requested them to do that when you checked the email box on your first post here. DON'T blame the people posting here for all the emails you are receiving. The proof of what I am saying is right on what you just posted. LOOK AT IT! 'SENT BY HOLLAND AMERICA"! And then stop complaining that everyone is sending you personal emails. Don't ever check that little box again. This is not rocket science to understand.

I know you did. It's just so frustrating because I told her this last week and she answered me (with a personal email!) and said she understood! Then again I am getting ready to pack for a Rotterdam cruise and have better things to do than this. Grrrr. Btw, my screen no longer has the email box to check on the bottom of the reply box. Does your's? Do you think maybe they have figured out having this box is not a good idea anymore?

WOW----Everyone is a little snippy here. Is this an example of the attitudes of Holland America's passengers? I hope not, because they will be in for a rude awakening when I travel with them!
