We are looking for a hotel in London --location is important. Someone recommended the Mayflower -- any experience with that hotel? We would like to find something under $200-250 . Is that possible in London?
I really liked the Sherlock Holmes Hotel and the Windemere Hotels. Both of these are very reasonable. They are both in great neighborhoods and are rather small hotels. The Sherlock Holmes has recently been totally remodeled and has a great breakfast included in the price. Often online specials can be found on this property. The rack rate is high but I've seen online rates as cheap as $119 U.S. Dollars. (not pounds) The Windemere is more of a B&B and has a wonderful small restaurant with great dinners at a very modest price. It is walking distance to Victoria Station and is in a VERY quiet neighborhood.
The Rembrandt, across the street from the Brompton Oratory and kitty corner to the Victoria and Albert Museum is our favorite. Very popular, British friends say, with Americans. Rates vary by room and season but will likely fall at the lower end of your budget.
Five minute walk to Harrods, 10 to Slaoane Square (Harvey Nicks and everyone else) and convenient bus and underground service.
Rooms at the back are, as in often the case in Europe, more desireable as they are quieter. In this case, the also face a lovely mews, not a brick wall.
But with all the uncertainty about war right now, unless you need to I think you'd do better to wait. If, as expected, it comes there'll be rooms galore for a song because no one will be travelling. And if not, no one will be travelling right away: leisure travel, at least, has long lead times.
