Men-bring the tux or dark suit. Women-there is something you want to wear again. I just keep it simple so I only need 1 pair of shoes. But I wear all the great tops with black long skirt.
Cruisers are getting sloppy with formal nights-but how many times do you go to weddings to wear this stuff.
A formal picture, taken on the ship, is a good bargain.

Just returned from a week on Zaandam. Formal nights are more formal than most cruise lines.
If you own a tux and wear it enough to be comfortable, take it. You will be in good company.
The majority of men wore dark suits. Some wore dark sport coat and slacks and looked fine. The tan plaid sport coats stood out and there were a handfull of mavericks in short sleeve shirts.
Somehow, the women always look fine.
The first formal night, the Captain's reception, is taken more seriously than the second, which is one too many for a seven night cruise.
Whatever you do, don't rent a baby blue tux with ruffled shirt at the mall for the cruise.
Last Holland cruise the men were about 60/40 in favor of suits. You will not feel out of place with a tux. The gals did tend dress a little more elegant. Long dresses, short dresses, pants suits, they all looked great.
