Mother just booked the Veendam, northbound, August 24. She has most of her plans
made, except for Anchorage. She arrives in Anchorage (from Seward) at
11:30 AM on the train, flight home does not depart until midnight.
Does anyone know what a very active great grandmother
can do in Anchorage for 12 hours ??
Hello....I live in Anchorage. Your mother can take the bus or taxi to downtown Anchorage, She will love wandering downtown and seeing all the spectacular flower beds, especially around the Performing Arts Center and all up and down Fourth Ave. There is a one hour trolley ride which I believe is about $10 which will take her to Earthquake Park and several other places. If she would like to eat dinner at a replica of an old Alaskan gold mine, she can call The Sourdough Mining Company and they come downtown to pick you up---free shuttle. 907-563-2272. After dinner, there is a great place across the street from there called Alaska Wildberry Products. It is a huge candy/jams/jellys, souvenir place. It has the world's largest chocolate waterfall--very fun. Also, she may want to take a cab to the Alaska Zoo on O'Malley Road.
We have a fabulous museum of art and history on 7th ave. if she is into that sort of thing.
If she stays downtown, our very favorite places to eat are Glacier Brewhouse (wood smoked fish and meats!!! ;0)) , Simon and Seaforts, and Orso. You will not be sorry at any of these places. EXCELLENT!
