I just returned from a wonderful week aboard the elegant Statendam in the lovely state of Alaska. I just wished to comment on the fact the despite the fact that I traveled along I never felt the lonely in the crowd feeling. This is my second trip on HAL and I can truely say that the size of the ship and type passenger the line attracts seems to make Holland America a prudent choice for solo travelers such as myself. I would make friends and then have the pleasure of actually seeing them again at some point. That was not always the case on the so called mega-ships of 2000 + guest.
I absolutely agree...HAL is wonderful for singles. Once, on the Statendam, I had spent too much time in the sun on the beach, returned to the ship, showered and promptly fell sound asleep. Phone rang about 8:45 p.m. - I hadn't shown up at dinner and my tablemates were worried about me - asked the Maitre D' to get my cabin number and call me. I thought that was a very nice gesture.
Agree too about the size of the ships - once met a great couple on the Ocean Princess on the first night and never could find them again in 10 days!
My husband and I met a very nice lady who took the Veendam with us. It was her first cruise, and she had a balcony cabin, solo. She was always so cheerful and excited about her trip. It was a pleasure to meet up with her. Lorrain, how are you? :-)
