We just finished a 10 night cruise to the southern caribbean on Celebrity Summit. It was our second cruise. Last one was on Millenium (also Celebrity). We noticed the drop in quality of the food. It's going down faster than the Titanic. Anybody got a comparison between Holland and Celebrity. We're looking for good food and Celebrity is no longer the answer.
I had a 12 day Europe and a 10 day Caribbean with HAL and was VERY happy with the food. In fact, I dont think I have ever heard a complaint about the food at all. Ive actuallyheard al lot of compliments about themm
I really think it has to do with the ship's head cook, rather than the cruiseline. This year I've sailed H.A.L. twice. The Amsterdam had terrible food and the Veendam had outstanding food. (Go figure!) Our Celebrity experiences were sililarly different from ship to ship. The head cook can make a big difference. Sometimes you can even tell which day is the head cook's day off on a particular cruise. (The food takes a nosedive on one particular day.)
They all start with similar ingredients, but what is done with the food is the big issue, I.M.H.O.
We're actually undecided about whether to cruise on Celebrity (Summit) or Holland (Zuiderdam) either the end of January or March 5. Having a terrible time deciding. We love to snorkel and dive and it seems Summit/Celebrity has more opportunities. We like quiet times (but don't want to wear a tux) and it sounds like activity on the Summit may be more rambunctious on that March 5 date.
The shore excursions on Summit/Celebrity seem more diverse and longer (which we like) than Holland/Zuiderdam.
Holland/Zuiderdam port stops seem shorter also. Any comments from those who have sailed either ship lately would be welcomed. Thanks in advance!
We just returned from the 7-day Christmas cruise on the Zui (our 9th cruise & third on HAL). The 2nd day out was a formal night -- male attire ranged from a tux to a suit to a sport jacket & tie (the majority electing to wear the latter). The ladies' attire ranged from beaded gowns to cocktail dresses to chic slacksuits (the majority electing to wear either of the latter two). Christmas Eve & Christmas Day was "Formal - optional" and there were very few tux/gowns on both those evenings. Visited St. Kitts, St. Thomas & Half Moon Cay (a full day at each) and all three ports appeared to be very popular with the diving/snorkeling folks several of whom booked excursions thru the ship, but the majority going the independent (and less expensive) route. On each of our three HAL sailings, our time in each port has been from 8a.m. until at least 4:30p.m., which we have always found to be plenty of time to sightsee, shop, stop for a cold one (or two) plus enjoy a local beach. Until you have experienced a cruise on HAL, you'll never know what you've missed. (HAL is always voted into the Top 10 in Conde Nast Traveler's annual survey by the hoi polloi.)
If you'd like any other info re the Zui or Volendam, parking at the port, hotel, etc. will be happy to oblige.
We just returned from the Summit 12/12 Southern Caribbean cruise and met some really great people. The ship was outstanding - food was uneven - but if you ordered carefully, it was really fine. I've also been on HAL and definitely think the food was MUCH BETTER on the Summit - also enjoyed the spa and thalassotherapy pool!
Anyone been on the Oosterdam and the Summit? Those two ships would be more like comparing apples to apples rather than apples to oranges.
We have sailed both and we were very much happier with the food and service on Hal both times. Had always heard how exceptional the food was on Celebrity but were a bit dissapointed. Not that we would not cruise Celebrity again..we would. I guess because of the high expectations we felt it should of been better. I agree that it does depend on a lot of things at times. I try to enjoy everything I can on a cruise...and I do! Love it!!!
Next cruise is on The Volendam ...Mar 5th! 53 days
Let us know how you like the Volendam - was on it last March for a 10 day cruise - EVERYTHING was great - room, service, food and the shows were especially good (they have to be for me to be absent from the casino) - and I saw all but one.
Hi, I will let you know. The Zaandam was a fantastic cruise and The Volendam is her sister ship so I should love her too. The only thing I have seen that worries us a bit is some posters have mentioned a sewage smell at times. Did you experience that at all or have heard the same thing?
We really enjoy the service..the crew is fantastic! Loved how they remembered your name and what you drink after meeting you just once. The napkin tricks, folding receipts into small shirts etc. The dutch hat that the staff from the ocean bar all signed and gave to us. Hal does a great job in making you feel special. Not for everyone I guess...but so far they have us won over!
