Default Volendam

Just completed 10 day western carribean trip and Holland once again proved to be a class act with early embarcation and first class service the best of all mainstream ships. The food was excellent and Lido had best assortment of sanwiches made from scratch.Shows need to be up graded and more marketing to a younger age group as most are in bed right after the show.Hot appetizers passed arround the bars a nice touch before dinner.Ice tea and lemonade served to passengers on the promonade very much appreciated.Flowers are all over the ship and the ship is spotless. They use hand sanitation dispenser as you get on the ship.It is my understanding that they will be adding tips to your acct.in the near future as there are many who think no tipping required is the norm. The alternative restaurant is not up to the level of Celebrity and Carnaval.Currently the coffee shop is free but this has already changed on the new ships with a charge .It is understandable why thy lead the pack in return guests and the last 3 cruises have been over 80%If you are looking for a restfull cruise and the best service Hollan d is the best choice.

I sailed on Volendam last March on a 10 day Carribian cruise and it was GREAT!!!

Food, service, shows, accomodations (verandah room), and casino were all wonderful.

I have taken other H/A trips before also (5 day Car, and 2 10 day Mex Riv), and they were all wonderful. jlk

Traveling the Inside Passage July 28 with my parents (83) & (77) for their 50 th anniversary. We are 1st time cruisers
They dont drink or gamble.
Are they going to have trouble finding things to do on board?
Any hints or advice
What dinner time do you find best?
Should I bring stools for them to rest on getting on and off at Canada Place?
Thanks

They might just enjoy watching the scenery - it is so beautiful. There is a nice library where they can read or there are comfortable sofa-type chairs in the Explorer's Lounge where I have seen many people reading and watching the scenery.

At to dinner time - what time do they eat at home. You should book the time through your travel agent. There will be 2 early seatings and 2 last seatings. I don't know what the times are for Alaska bu for the Caribbean they are 5:45 & 6:15pm and 7:45 & 8:15pm. I think Alaska is maybe 15-30 minutes earlier.

You don't have to take stools for them to sit on getting on off at Canada Place. There are lots of chairs in the Terminal. Why not request wheel chair service, through your TA for embarkation and disembarkation.

Do try and take them on the White Mountain Rail Pass Excursion - do the 1pm excursion. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I did it last year. It's an old steam train - am sure your Dad would enjoy this trip. You can book on-line through HAL's web page.

Have a great time.

As for dinner, you will eat @8:15 ifyou take second sitting. The show follows at 10:15 and may be too late for them. The shows are very entertaining and varied and do not miss crew show. There are plent of activaties for your parents and they can stay as busy as they want or rest instead.Would also suggest eating in the alternative rest. called the Pinnacle for a first class experience. The cost is $20 but well worth it.You have chosen a first class ship and know you will enjoy Alaska where we lived for 17 yrs.

HAL has been doing a test of 4 seatings, as I stated above on 2 of their ships. Starting shortly all ships will be going to the 4 seatings. We will be on the Rotterdam the middle of May and have been told that the 4 seatings will be in place then. We have requested the 7:45pm seating, as it is in the Upper level of the dining room as is the 5:45 seating. The other 2 are in the lower level.

Hi, just cruised aboard the beautiful Ms Volendam 3/5/04 for 10 days. We had a great time...probably the most relaxing cruise we have ever taken. Still had a great time and ate way too much! But, really liked the food and there was plenty of great choices. The service again was fantastic. Got aboard around 11:30 or so and was eating lunch soon after. WOW In the cabin by 1:30 and luggage in our cabin by 2:00! WOW again!
It does quiet down after 11:00 I know, but we always found something to do to finish the eve. We dance and so we were in the Ocean Bar a lot. We also met a crew member we had the pleasure to meet on the Zaandam 3 years ago ( Alwynn) He is a great guy and it was a real treat to see him again.
At the Mariners cocktail party the Captain said out of 1200 passengers almost 900 were returning passengers. That says a lot!
We were on our Veranda untill 9;30 on the last day and cruised right to our luggage and sadly went to the airport to head home. All was just a breeze.
Thanks Hal! You do it right for us!
We are planning our next cruise and Hal probably will be the choice for us again!

You can always do what I have done with my folks (78-65).. Plant them at the covered pool at a table with a nice cup of coffee or tea and let them have the the buffee Lido lunch!
