Can someone tell me how far it is from the docks in Vancouver to the airport and are there plenty of cabs available. Our ship arrives in Vancouver at 8am and our flight out of Vancouver is at 1pm. Is this enough time?
You should be off the ship by 10 am at the latest. There is a line up of cabs available immediately outside the cruise terminal. The fare is in the $30.00 (CND) range. The route is through the city and the high-end part of the residential area, so it makes for an interesting 30 minutes trip. Drop off is right in front of the departure area and the signage is excellent. You will have plenty of time to shop in the duty-free shops before boarding and if by some miracle you need more eats after this cruise, the departure area cafes provide great variety of high quality offerings.
We splurged for a stretch limo with was about 42 Canadian. Quite a bargain and a lot of fun.
Be prepared for long lines at Vancouver airport. The problem we had on both of our trips was we got to the airport before we were allowed to check in at our airline (Alaska air). By the time we were allowed to check in all of the busses from the ships had arrived so the line, instead of having 10 people in it, had hundreds.
So there was a wait to check in, a wait at 2 US customs areas, a wait at the Airport tax station (even though we pre-paid), a wait at the luggage drop off area, a wait at the security stations.
In other words...be prepaired to wait a lot! : ^ )
I also suggest you be one of the first off the ship and take a cab. There can be considerable lines. If significant- head upstairs to the Pan Pacific - tip the doorman for a cab- will be much quicker. Allow at least 30 mins during business hours through Vancouver. At least $25+++ca. Poor exchange if you use US funds- most all cabs now take credit cards.
