This was my first cruise with Holland Amercia. It certainly is different from other cruises we have taken. I noticed right away there were very few young people on board . As a matter of fact ,I would guess the average age of the passangers to be around 60 years.
While the ship offered much to do,it was certainly oriented toward the older crowd. We were very disappointed with the service and quantity of food in the main dining room. Presentation was ok. The staff with the exception of our cabin steward seem to have low morale and I guessed this was because of the change in the tipping policy. I was curious and ask several staff members if this was the case and they said yes. I also talked with several other experienced cruisers and most all said there was a definite change of attitude. We booked a balcony stateroom and it was very spacious. My husband was sitting on the balcony one evening while we were getting ready to leave Juneau when suddenly water started pouring from the deck above and flooded our balcony. Needless to say he was not happy about this. It seems the deck washing could have been done while we were in Juneau 8 hours and not when the passengers had reboarded the ship. Was our experience the rule rather than the exception ? I would like to think so
We were on the same cruise and had a ball. I'll agree that the crowd is much older. My husband and I were celebrating an anniversary and everyone made us feel extra special. We did not get flooded on our varanda. I thought that the luggage handling procedures in the disembarkation left a lot to be desired. It was over an hour before our luggage showed up at the convention center after we got there and our driver took a short side trip.
We were in the deluxe varanda suites and our concierge was wonderful. Whatever you needed, Grace was there. I was a bit disappointed with what seemed like such a waste of food, though, as there were many, many appetizers and things in the Neptune lounge that seemed to not get eaten. We also had a bad experience with the salmon bake (no, make that char) in Juneau. Salmon was WAY overdone.
Other than those couple of things, we really enjoyed the week.
I am a cruise specialist and travel agent - I had lunch on the Statendam on the day that both of you arrived for your cruise. It is in really extraordinary condition for a older ship. Lunch was lovely, the ship was very nice and the service was gracious, and close by. The dining stewards were always nearby, but not hovering nor testy. Alaska cruise guests tend to be a bit older for some reason, but Holland America is an elegant, conservative, modern, classic cruise experience that suits anyone of any aget that appreciates fine things. In my cruise experiences (I travel as a regular guest, not as a travel agent), Holland America has always been a very classy experience.
