Default buying liquor onboard

Many of the cruise lines we have been on in the past few months allow you to shop in the liquor duty free shop, at an additional price, letting you to take liquor to your cabin during your cruise. Is this service available on HAL? Also do they sell the "wine package" when you board so you don't have to decide each day what wine you would like served with your dinner.

You can buy liquour in the Duty Free shop on board, but unfortunately you can no longer take it back to your cabin for consumpation. If you do buy any, it will be delivered to you the last day of the cruise. HAL has just implemented this recently.

Yes, you can buy Wine Packages when you board.

You can order liquor and mixes from room service. Cheaper than buying at the bars.

Re the Wine Package- how do you know what wine you want with your dinner until you know what you will be having for dinner each night? I don't see how anyone can order their wine 7, 10, 14 or more days ahead.

We just returned from a Westerdam cruise, S category room. Yes, yiou can purchase wine for dinner a variety of ways. We chose a package of 6 wine (3 champagnes for formal night) and 3 red wines. At dinner, when we wanted the reds, we actually changed the wine to another type without any difficulty. You can also purchase liquor in the duty-free shop and pay a consuption fee to drink it in your cabin. My husband, who likes good scotch, brought a bottle of good scoth on board by putting it in an empty plastic water bootle in his luggage. No problem. We could sit on the veranda and sip our pre-dinner drinks, eat out hor-dorveres, before dinner and enjoy the beautiful views.
Since S categories get menues delivered to the room in the morning, you can go to the Lida deck and choose a wine for your dinner the same day at a good discount. Hope this information helps.

Susan Shipe,

In regard to "You can also purchase liquor in the duty-free shop and pay a consuption fee to drink it in your cabin."; this must have been wine, right?

Actually, I really meant liquor. I haven't had any experience with bottles of wine in our cabin. We tend to drink wine only with dinner. The champagne that we drink in our cabin are generally gifts from the captain or special occasions.

"You can also purchase liquor in the duty-free shop and pay a consuption fee to drink it in your cabin."

Are you sure? You can't on any of the other HAL ships. Any liquour you buy in the duty free shop is not delievered to your cabin until the night before disembarkation. This has been in effect since about May, I believe.

Did you actually buy liquour in the duty free shop and take it back to your cabin?

My understanding from the various ships we have been on is :- This only applies if you pay the 'duty free' price. If you pay the 'full price', including the duty, then you can consume it there and then. (or wait until you are back in your stateroom....

You used to be able to buy in the shops with no "consumption" fee, then that changed and they charged 20% if you took it to your room. No can no longer take liquor to your room from the shops. It seems the vendors would have a problem with that. We would buy some if we could but its not worth it to us to have to lug it home so we never buy to take home.
