The Veendam is a very nice ship.We have been on board twice. She sails out of the port of Tampa which is where we live. I like the fact that it is a mid size (55,000GT)
I have been on some of the larger ships on other lines and found that many of the organized activties felt like <cattle calls> but to each his own.
The lay out is the same on the Ryndam and Statendam. Except for decor.
The crew is Philippine or Indonesain and the staff is English. I think the food is good, and the alternative dinning is really excellent.
They cater to a middle to older group of cruisers. you wont find wet t-shirt, chug a lug beer parties, or wild teen on these ships.
As for Alaska, I too am looking forward to sailing there in June.
We will be on the Zaandam.
Hope this is of some help. Happy sailing.
Yes they have a laundry on some of the decks. I like to take my own soap, and dryer sheets. I think the price to wash and dry is about $3.00. On longer cruises, I sometimes do 2 loads, depending how hard we play and get dirty. <lol>
The Veendam is good in most ways and has an excellent chef.
Our last cruise on her had a cabin with major mechanical problems but that is just the breaks sometimes. Heating, A.C., sewers, water, and phones were out of order much of the time. Even our smoke detector was mal-functioning. The response from Customer Relations was poor.
Our first cruise on the Veendam was quite excellent however.
I would gladly sail the Veendam again but would not expect perfection.
We just enjoyed a 12 day cruise on Veendam and think her a great ship.
She's well maintained and beautiful IMO
Food was very, very good in dining room.
Pinnacle (alternative restaurant) was excellent.
Gorgeous flowers throughout the ship.
We had excellent dining room and cabin stewards. Both were great.
