Default Some questions about Zuiderdam

Hi. Going on the Zuiderdam April 30th and am very excited. This is my 8th cruise and first with HAL. Although my last cruise was on teh Grand Princess, and was the best I have been on, I am expecting less on this cruise. If I get more, I will be impressed, but I don't think anything can beat the Grand Princess's crew. Although, I have never had a bad time on a cruise. I have also been on Carnival, RCCL, NCL and premiere.

My questions... My husband and I are smokers. I was not asked if I needed a smoking room and have read in reviews that you can smoke in all cabins, as they do not have non-smoking cabins. Is this true, or should I call back and specify?

Also, I read in a review that they will not give you more than one lobster dinner. You can only get one per person. Is this true? My husband and I both like to order 2 on lobster night.

We are both young, under 30, but are looking forward to this ship. I here it is more of an "older crowd", but honestly, we don't care. On a cruise, I feel that no matter what age you are, everyone there has one thing in common...their love of cruises.

My wife and I (both 34) were on the Z last Presidents' Day (2004). She's a great ship, and with your attitude, you should have a wonderful time.

I can't address your smoking concerns, as we don't smoke. I also don't recall any limits on anything in the dining room...though we didn't choose lobster.

As you're both under 30, you *will* notice a considerable age difference between you and your fellow passengers, who will in a great many cases be old enough to be your grandparents. Things I noticed about this was more nit-picky complaints about service, and a lot more wheelchairs and scooters zipping around. The nightlife of the ship seems to fizzle out completely after say, 11:00 PM. On the positive side, fewer people were in the pool!

HAL is a great line, with beautiful newer ships and outstanding service, in my experience. I just would like to see a little younger demographic- not quite my age (or younger, like you guys!), but not 40+ years older, either. We'll certainly be back, just not in the next few years.

Wait till you see Half Moon Cay- paradise, and probably the highlight of our week.

Have a ball!

Hello rns91294,

Re:your questions,

Yes there is smoking allowed in all cabins. People sharing will usually not smoke in the cabin if the roommate doesn't.

Lobsters. I think I heard a rumor to that effect (1 per person), but would still be surprised if they limit you to one each. Of course I come from the Maritimes and Lobster is a weekly dish. Spoiled no doubt! (me... not the lobster!).

Have a great cruise, I sure you will enjoy it. The age demographics must be a bit younger in April. I'm sailing the Zuiderdam on 23rd April and have spoken to at least 5 women (all in our 30's) going on the April cruises with Zuiderdam.

Have a wonderful time!

Dani

Qoute: "Yes there is smoking allowed in all cabins. People sharing will usually not smoke in the cabin if the roommate doesn't."

You do mean that if there is a couple (say husband and wife) and one smokes ant the other doesn't, right? I mean, we wouldn't get roomed with other people, right? That doesn't sound right at all.

Other than that, thanks for everything. I am looking forward to the quite nights. My husband and I are not big party animals and it will be nice to feel like we have the ship almost to ourselves at 1 in the morning.

Hi,

Sorry for confusing you! HAL lines offers a share program for solo travellers. They hook you up with another member of the same sex and hopefully age. Even if they don't end up making you share you still pay the double rate which is a lot cheaper than a single supplement of up to 200%.

I have also heard they do a fantastic job of cleaning and with their great air filtration you will probably not even know if the previous tenants were smokers.

What you and your husband do is totally up to you!

Hope you have a great time. Everyone usually will get from a cruise what they want or put in!

Best of luck,

Dani

You are right! We all get out of a cruise what we want! And I want relaxation. Actually, my husband and I have been married for 4 1/2 years, and this is our last vacation prior to trying to start a family. Maybe we will start on the cruise. lol.

And that is wonderful that they will pair you up with someone traveling alone, if you are alone as well. That is really nice of them!!

Less than a month to go. I am getting very excited.

I've never yet been on a cruise on any ship that limited you on what you eat. They will bring you ONE lobster the first time around, but if you want another...just ask your waiter and low and behold...it will arrive! That goes for everything else on the menu as well. If you order the steak and afterwards want a lobster, they will bring you a lobster too.

I've found the dishes are not overly plentiful, but I also found that after all those courses, it ends up being just right. The food on HAL is pretty good, I've had better and I've had worse and if you get something that's not to your liking, ask your waiter and he'll get you something else.

I asked for 2 lobsters when I gave my order to the waiter and he came out with 3..they were great !!!

age group depends on alot of factors for that particular sailing...we went last October and there was a very nice cross section of ages

We enjoyed the Zuiderdam and found it a very relaxing laid back vacation with a great spa with massages and the hydro therapy pool which I still dream about and wish I could build one in my back yard

There are no special smoking cabins -- I once had a cabin previously occupied by a smoker - lingering odor, but cabiln steward replaced drapes and fixed the problem . They will bring two lobsters if you ask -- and then bring seconds on request - probably even thirds. The crowd is more mature than on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Princess - but you will not have the slobs who seem to frequent those lines. The calmer venues tend to close down early, but the disco near the casino roars along very late.

Do you have to pay to use that pool at the spa?

You can have as many lobsters as you can eat....we both had two.I ordered two entrees three nights. The cabins can all be smoked in,don`t worry to that. The guests are older but it sounds like you have the right attitude there. This crew was the very best on any ship I have sailed on up to now.My wife and I have been on three other lines .Same as you have taken.FOR SURE GO and try the Pinnacle in the Oddessy, the Porterhouse is unreal.Service in everyway was top notch.
HAVE FUN AND ENJOY .....................................Patrick

Well, Friends of ours just booked the same cruise!! So I at least know someone else will be my age on the ship.

I am getting excited!! 12 more days to go!! Except, I am falling apart. I have a cough and swollen glands. Any suggestions how I can keep healthy before this cruise? I had bronchitis 6 weeks ago, and the cough was finally going away until yesterday. That is probably normal though, since it can take 6-8 weeks or more for the cough to go away.
