I hope this is not a silly question, but are there ATM machines on HAL cruise ships? If not, how do you folks handle getting cash? I know all of the purchases on board are billed to your account, but I'm thinking of buying things in ports, and I don't want to end up with foreign currency? I assume I can cash travellers' checks on board. Finally, concerning cash and valuables---Do the cabins have safes in them?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.
When I was on the Zuiderdam last June, I got cash from the front desk. Added to my room charge with a reasonable fee. It did not appear on my credit card as a cash advance, it was just part of the settlement charges for the cruise.
You can cash travellers cheques at the Front Desk. The GRM can't cash them for you - this is done only at the Front Desk, which is open 24 hours a day.
Gerhardt - take US Travellers cheques with you - very easy to cash and no charge for cashing them.
I was also surprised to find that HAL did not have ATM's on board. For the CM Hong Kong to Osaka cruise on Statendam, we will be taking travelers checks for the first time in ten years. They can be cashed at the ship's customer service desk or used on shore.
ATM's are readily available in most Caribbean and European ports and are also available in Hong Kong and Japan but are not readily available in other areas of China.
The casino is still an option and you can have cash charged to your account at the customer service desk.
Take care,
Mike

There have been ATM's on every HAL ship I've been on. You might want to take some travlers cheques with you as well and you can have them cashed at the cashier and it won't cost you anything.
I always use a credit card shopping in ports..if you purchase something and are not happy with it or have a problem, you will have your credit card company do the fighting for you.

Well if there are ATM's on board HAL ships I haven't seen them!!!!!!
Travelers checks (small denominations)are easily cashed at the Front Desk or in the Casino.
CC shopping in port is no problem - it makes life simple. For the odd coffee/icecream/beer, UD$ cash is usually acceptable
