Holland America/Statendam Internet Options
It's time for me to ask some questions:

Is in cabin Internet available on Statendam?
What sort of speed have you experienced in the Internet Café?

I will be posting updates of my Statendam Hong Kong to Osaka cruise and I would prefer to use my laptop but the Internet café is always an alternative. I don't know if I can master a Chinese keyboard at a Beijing Internet café.

Take care,

We sailed the Ryndam this past September - October and there was no internet cabin service. This was the ship that got refurbished recently to the signature of excellence.
I used their internet a few times and the speed was not to bad, sailing the Mex Riv.
You can rent the PC card for your own laptop for wi-fi. Then you get charged the same as the on board internet café. There are only a couple of hot spots for the use and does not work in cabin.
Sorry, I don't remember the cost but packages were available.

Know what you mean about keyboards, certain ports we were in the Mex Riv drove me up the wall with the keyboards.

Thanks Y2C,

I will have wireless and Statendam is scheduled to have completed its "Signature of Excellence" upgrade by the time of the Hong Kong sailing. I will see what transpires. I know that the computers in the Internet cafes won't take CD or floppy input so pre-writing posts is out of the question. You know how fast I can compose. :-P

I can just imagine trying to type on a Chinese keyboard. I wonder what "Take Care" would look like in Mandarin. LOL

Mike I will be on the Statendam the cycle after yours and have done a little checking. They say they will have numerous wi fi hot spots around the ship, but you will be charged for the use of the satellite, just as Y2K said. Won't work in your stateroom unless you are lucky enough to be right under a hot spot or something. At least that 's my understanding.

Thanks Rich!

I haven't been able to get as definitive of an answer from Holland America.

I appreciate you letting me know and I'll try to leave the ship in one piece. LOL

Take care,

Mike I am looking forward to following your progress. Incidentally, please go to Practical Advice, Cruise Cuisine forum, "Food on RCL,NCL and HAL" thread and check out the extremely negative post re the Statendam from one Grdner and my reply, and hers back etc. I was floored by this post. My wife and I have about 50+ days on HAL ships and have never had any bad experience whatever (except some very rough seas south of Cape Horn :D ). I can't tell whether this person has a legitimate gripe or is just one of those chronic gripers. I mean on any long cruise if there is a long time between restock ports, the bananas get a little brown. And yes, there ARE flies in the tropics. What do you think? When I first read the post it sure threw some cold water on my excited anticipation. :-?
