Hi Maddog28...Good luck in your new position! HAL is our favorite line of all the ones we've been fortunate enough to sail with. Most of all...the staff and crew have been just so wonderful! We have close to 100 days of sailing with HAL...and the only thing that I can say that I dislike is that we have to disembark the ship when they say that our cruise is over!
Haven't been on the Statendam yet...tho we have been on her sisters the Maasdam (2X) and the Veendam.
Again...good luck to you!
My wife and I were on the Statendam for 34 days recently Hong Kong to Osaka, then Osaka to Vancouver for repositioning. Naturally there were essentially no kids on that long cruise as you would expect. that will change for the summer no that he ship has repositioned for the summer Alaska run. There will be plenty of families for that. The Navigation and cruise staff are European and American/Canadian. The rest of the crew are Indonesian and Filipino. HAL is famous for its wonderful Indonesian and Filipino crews. They are the best. Indonesians are cabin stewards waiters and the like, and the bar staff are all Filipino. I went up to see the kid's facilities, Sky deck aft, one day and they are really neat. If I were a kid or a teen, I would really be impressed.
In case you are interested, I have posted a few pics from our cruise on the galleries under HongKong, china, Japan, including a few of the Statendam. It's a fine ship and HAL is a fine line. Happy sailing
