Default Change of Itinerary!

I am booked on the November 19, 2006 sailing of the Westerdam and have just found out that they changed the itinerary! They are replacing Costa Maya for Key West! I suppose that these things happen, I have never been to Key West so I suppose it still works for me. Anyone else on this cruise? What do you think of the change?

At least you know of the change well in advance of sailing!! As you will read on these threads, many times there can be itinerary changes with no real advance notice. Usually, there is a good reason...either weather, political unrest, etc.

Cruise lines don't like to disappoint their passengers...having said that, you might call HAL and just ask why the port change. They might surprise you and give you a direct answer!

Key West is a great port especially if you have never been there. I wouldn't be disappointed. As fieldmouse said, you have plenty of warning. Celebrity is the line that is the worst about this. They change ports back and forth all the time. It drives me crazy......

While I haven't been to Key West (our Galaxy TA was scheduled there, but the hurricane got there first), I've been to Costa Maya three times, and would take Key West over Costa Maya.

Me too plus I can't imagine any one port making a difference in the success or failure of a cruise: Well, a few times I know of people expecting to do Bermuda and ending up doing New England: that isn't necessarily a bad thing but could be prett disappointing or if our Panama Canal cruise in November got sent to England istead. I might be a little upset.

I am actually somewhat pleased about the change! It just seems that I should have heard about it through my TA or HAL. I found out by chance when checking the HAL website. I called HAL and they confirmed that it was a change. So off to Key West we will go!

I would take Key West any day over Costa Maya! The last time we were at Costa Maya we didn't even get off of the ship. Key West is great.

Most often when this is done for non-storm related reasons it is because of port overcrowding. The pier at Costa Maya is very difficult to dock at due to high winds that are almost always present. There is also limited room for ships. The most ships that have been there when we've been there are 3, and that's 2 too many. The little fake shopping village is so overcrowded you can't even comfortably stop to browse at the shops.

Yes you should have heard about this, but not always to the cruise lines let everyone know about changes. If HAL didn't let your TA know about the change, the TA couldn't let you know. We did Celebrity last year and the itinerary was changed 4 times in 9 months; never was I as the TA notified by Celebrity. I found out the same way you did and had to keep my entire group informed.

Massive changes will be passed on to agents and/or guests, but sometimes not just one port. Of course all changes should be publicized, but lots of things should be done that aren't.
