Kuki, I have on both NCL and Celebrity. NMNita
I have see passengers turned away on Celebrity's Infinity and Mercury.

(e.g. two couples in front of us for dining on the Infinity.
The request was tactful...they were advised of the alterative dining arrangement. Passenger response was, "Thank you...no problem"... The whole thing was quick, easy and no one made a scene...had we not been behind them...we wouldn't have even been aware of the situation...in fact, we don't think anyone else was.)

On the Mercury...we only saw the women leaving from the dining room door, and they didn't look happy...They were dressed casually neat in Jeans ...but it was an informal night...and we had been advised before through the daily news of the dress requirements. Again...no big scene...but they were turned away.

Default dont be so old fashion!

As long as the jeans are paried up with a nice top and shoes i dont see the problem...your on a cruise and if its casual night, be casual your supposed to be relaxing!!(hence the whole VACATION thing) Ive seen alot of people all jazzed up that look god awful...I have seen jeans in the dinning rooms on both HAL and celebrity .....CARRIBEAN crusies. I swear some people cruise just to complain! Quit worrying about other people and enjoy yourself! And if you think someone wearing jeans is going to spoil your dinner then you need to get a life already! Besides after they sit down your not going to notice anyway!

you are missing the point: it isn't a matter of how one looks, most of us agree nice jeans look fine, but if the policy does not allow jeans the greeters will or may send a person back to change. If the OP can live with being sent back fine, otherwise it is best not to push it. I haven't sailed HAL for years but saw 2 couples turned away on Celebrity last year and a friend of my grnaddaughters wanted to come in to the dining room to ask me a question: after some discussion she was finally allowed in. I'm just glad I'm not on the Zuiderdam this month. Why do people have such a hard time following rules? Is it asking so much to do that and if a person isn't up to dressing up on formal nights just order room service. Heck eat naked for all anyone cares!!!!!

I don't this has anything to do with being a complainer, but simple respect for policies and rules. For me, I sometimes wish the dress code would be rlaxed (well, it has been considerably). We are in the process of packing right now and not happy with the suits, dresses, etc we have to drag along, but we realized this when we decided to book HAL.

I understand following rules and polices...when I cruised with Holland last year I wore jeans to the dinning room on CASUAL night (i DO dress up for formal and informal nights) I paired my jeans up witha nice top...and got complimented by our waiter on how nice I looked. I love dressing up for formal nights but to me on casual night you should be allowed to dress casually...ok Im done with the jeans already lol hope everyone has a wonderful thanksgiving!

Ihave more of a problem with those men who show up in the dining room at lunch and breakfest wiyh cut off tee shirts. There is never anything said to these individuals on any cruise line.Asfor what is considered casual look at many of the work places for Friday casual and in most cases there is a defined rule in this regard and must be followed or this will be a thing of the pastMany of the businesses in the south have a dress down on Friday and in most cases this does not include jeans as casual attire.

We have never cruised with HAL and I have always thought that it was much more "upscale" than some of the other cruise lines that we have sailed with. I went onto this board to see some of the comments about dress, etc. and was surprised to see this thread about jeans.

On NCL we have come to expect but not really accept casual wear in the dining rooms since casual cruisers have become a target market for this company. We have been "shopping around" for other lines that have a more formal but not stuffy atmosphere because we truly enjoy getting dressed for the evening and like to see other couples who enjoy it too. On NCL the casual trend has really escalated from what we have seen on our last two cruises.

I am hoping that HAL hasn't started on the same trend as the other lines as we are very close to booking our next cruise with them.

HAL is more upscale than RCCI and Celebrity. As for wearing Jeans in the dining room? We've never seen it...but it might depend on your itinerary.

For example Alaska...the people, everything in Alaska tends toward the casual. The weather is unpredictable and excursions can be long and involve you and nature in some way! Jeans, boots and a Parka just seen right!

I think it depends on the cruise and your passenger base.

We were in Alaska in early May on Celebrity and NEVER saw jeans in the dining room even on casual night. In fact on Celebrity and HAL we've never seen anyone IN the dining room out of the required dress. (RCCI is a different story...but then it's market base is different too.)

Actually with HAL you can always hang out at the Lido instead of ordering in.

this is correct but if you plan on being in any of the public areas of the ship afterwards (show lounge, bars, casino) you will still need to be in the suggested attire for the evening

This is true, but watch out - those black suits I bring aboard use weight belts for cummerbunds.

I think too that the wearing Jeans is depending on the cruise level and passengers base.

Default they dont care on casual night

Just got off the zuiderdama few days ago on a 7 night eastern carribean cruise and there were a TON of people wearing jeans in the dining room on casual night and threw out the ship every night..NO ONE WAS TURNED AWAY!!! They also dont say anything about not being able to wear jeans in the dress code anywhere on the ship including the manuals in your room.

Default it's different on every ship and every cruise

we just finished a 10 day on the Volendam and while there were some jeans on casual night it was a VERY low percentage. Also saw a couple denied entry because they were wearing shorts to dinner in the dining room. I personally did not see any man wearing khakis and a sports coat on the formal nights

Neither do they say anything about wearing a speedo on formal night...I guess they think that common sense will prevail.

Fieldmouse, I think the point is that previously HAL's dress code specified no jeans, T-shirts, tank tops or shorts on casual nights in the dining room.

Now the word "jeans" has been deleted from that list.

I saw some jeans on casual night in the dining room on my recent cruise. My sister even wore them on the first night!

Ahhhhhhhh....thanks for the update!

We like HAL a lot, and plan an extended cruise in 2007...sooooooooo
we'll be watching future posting to see just how flexible HAL gets in the 'casual' wear dept.

Maybe enforcement depends on the Cruise line, ship and staff.
But, hey, for us, the reality is: It's all good...No worries!

Personally, I hate jeans. I hate wearing them and I really dont care to see them on others. I think they are uncomfortable and they just dont look "nice".

But, thats only my opinion. As cruise lines compete for passangers, the rules will continue to evolve to accomodate the likes and dislikes of the majority of the customers. Lets face it, we live in a dress down society. I am amazed what passes for "business casual" in the workplace these days. Its inevitable that this trend is going to make its way to the cruiselines.

It seems to me that HAL was one of the last to go, but alas, it appears she has also gone to the dark side of casual dress. Oh well, I'll still have a great time on my next HAL cruise. Jeans be damned! :o I have too many other things in life to worry about, than to worry about what other people are wearing on vacation.

I do really enjoy formal nights because I feel people look great when dressed up and the mood always seems to be much more festive and bright. Hopefully, this tradition will hold on, but I'm not optomistic.

I have never packed jeans for a cruise yet, and the relaxation of HAL's dress code does not matter to me.
I find jeans way too hot for the Caribbean, for one thing.
And way too *common* for a special occasion such as a cruise!

But if others wear them on casual night, then so be it.
I still don't think you'll find people on HAL turning out in great numbers in jeans.

HAL has downdressed over the years. Not nearly as many tuxes on the recent Prinsendam cruise - mainly suits on formal nights and not so many jackets on informal.

Well, thats a shame. Especially since Prinsendam seemed to be one of the more formal ships in the fleet. I'm sure if the pax on Prinsendam are dressing down, the pax on the vista ships are dressing down even more. Oh well, just another one of the great HAL traditions that seems to be fading away. Seems like a good topic for another thread.

I have to say, on my last HAL cruise, Zuiderdam Nov '05, I did not notice any jeans in the DR and I was a bit suprised by the number of tuxedos on formal night, especially the first one.

One might think that the tuxes were over in the Pinnacle since many tables were empty at dinner and many cruisers used the Pinnacle (as might be expected on the upscale Prinsendam). However, this was not the case in observing ship's photographs and lounges. There did seem to be alot of folks at disembarkation that I did not recognize, a bit odd given just 800 or so passengers and no rotovirus aboard. Might be right concerning traditions fading away, although the service level was up to HAL's level of years past, a pleasant surprise.

Default No Jeans In The Dining Room

Please do not wear jeans on casual night. The word "casual attire" needs to be spelled out because some people don't have a clue. Tuxedos on formal nights, suits on informal nights, dress slacks or khakis on casual night.

Your jeans and sweater outfits may look smashing on deck during the day, but please don't wear that in the dining room.

I personally do not wear jeans on ships, I don't wear them much period, but on the Amsterdam last month we saw several people, especially those under 50 (they're weren't many) wearing jeans both the first and last night. What we saw: formal nights; about 30% in tux; 50% in dark suits and 20% in sport coats and dress shirts (with ties) we had 1 informal night on our 10 night cruise: that night most of the men were wearing sports coats with or without ties and on the 7 casual nights khakis or docker type pants and golf shirst or sport shirts. On formal nights some of the men changed clothes after dinner but many stayed in their suits or tux, if that is what they were wearing. Like most lines, HAL seems to be going a little more casual as this is what the public is asking for. NMnita
