Just got back from the Zuierdam. Great ship, Great time! No problems except for one. When we checked in, I told them I did not want charging privileges for our kids, 11 & 13. No problem they said and punched a hole in the S&S card. This was to stop any charges on it. On the last night I glanced at the total on our S&S and said "Yes, that is about right.". Upon arriving home and looking more closely, I found that both kids had charged a small amount on the cards. I really didn't care about the items they purchased and it was a very small amount and I will of course pay it. But it bothered me a little that they would be able to charge after I had requested they not be able to. I sent an e-mail to HAL customer service asking how this could have happened and what could be done in the future to avoid this. I also told HAL that I was not questioning the charges only why it had been allowed. Two weeks have gone by and still no response from HAL. Don't know what happened, but kind of irratates me not to have gotten a reply. Would still go on HAL again. It was great!
As an auditor I would take exception to a charge being allowed on a blocked account. The kids might have bought a watch, a camera, or another expensive item instead of a soft drink or trinket.
That said, I have made my guy foot the cruise bill since he was four. He could sign back them and thereafter we have used his credit card for ship's line of credit and he had to worry about dad going wild.

Its my understanding that the hole punched in the card is to indicate that they are underage for the casino and bars. I was not aware that this would stop the ability to purchase on the card. My daughters card was punched, but she could still use it freely to purchase on the ship. I think that kind of block would need to be "programmed" into the card and the account.
Good to see your kids show restraint I guess my biggest fear would not be that they would charge something, but that they would lose the card and someone else would charge something.
Actually found many HAL adult passengers had punched a hole to hang the card around there neck on a lanyard, much as we do our security cards at work. Seemed an interesting concept I had not really noticed on other cruises.
