I go both ways. There are times I've purchased a package onboard, especially when there are several sea days, to keep up with the grandkids and my DW's aging mother. But usually I look for an internet cafe on land. They are so cheap in comparison with the ship's charges. And it gives me something to do while DW is shopping!
Do you only read/send e-mails or do you do any posting to Message Boards in "Live From Aboard' type threads?
Depends on the length of the cruise. For a short cruise, I may check emails, but I write a "review" type posting after I return.
I tried doing a "Live From" thread on my Hawaii/South Pacific cruise last January, but it became almost impossible as we got further into the South Pacific. The posting time was incredible and when I lost my entire entry one day, I just gave up and stopped doing it. I then wrote a comprehensive review upon my return.
I plan to post a "Live From" thread on this board when I take my Veendam TransAtlantic next month (April). That's an 18-day cruise with some interesting ports. I'm hoping posting it will be easier here.
I may try to do a "Live From" thread on the return trip on the QE2, more a highlight of the ship's facilities and services since there are no ports on that trip.
I can't be bothered searching for internet cafes in ports. Guess it's laziness, but I'd prefer to use my precious port time doing other things than sitting at a computer. So, I just pay the higher prices to use the internet onboard ship.
