My mom and aunt(first time cruisers) are going with my grandma(been on a few cruises) on an Alaskan cruise in May. My mom and aunt are both from the Seattle, WA area and are more casual in their dress. They both prefer slacks over skirts and dress. They are wondering what is considered formal wear for woman on a Holland America Alaskan Cruise? Any help on this would be great. Thanks

I'm going to give you the standard "rita line" on this ... even though it angers some people. Tell them to wear whatever they feel comfortable wearing. A nice pair of slacks and a top ... a dress you would wear to a restaurant at home ... all of these things are fine for formal night on this type of a sailing.
You'll notice that especially on Caribbean and Alaska itineraries, the dress tends to be more casually-oriented and as long as they are dressed "decently," no one will bat an eyelash.
I agree with this! You will see some very "formal" dress, but after 16 cruises I find myself sticking with a nice pair of slacks, silk blouse, shawl and low heel shoes. I just can't bring myself to pack and carry around all of the stuff any more. As long as you look dressed up and are wearing something you would wear out to a nice restaurant at home you will be fine. On a Alaska cruise be sure and bring a wrap for the evenings, you will need it.
