Default Honest opinion about kids on HAL

We are sailing on the Zuiderdam in December on a 7 day cruise. From what I hear, this is not a great cruiseline for children. We have a 4 year old son, and I would hate for him to be the only little one on board. This is a family cruise, so we are going and we plan on having a great time regardless of the number of children on board....however, I would love to get feedback on what your experience has been on 7 day cruises.

Thanks.....

You don't say when in December you are cruising ... so it's hard to help you.

If you go on a HAL Vista ship in the summertime or during school holidays, believe me ... you will get TONS of children. If you go during off-peak periods, you won't get as many. However, since you say your son is four years old, I can't imagine he won't have other kids his age to play with. Four years old is too young for school ... so parents with kids in the same age bracket will also probably be onboard.

Also, if you are traveling with a large family group, won't others in the group be bringing their young children along?

Rest easy. I'm sure your son will have a blast. The ammenities other ships have to lure children ... rock climbing walls, etc. ... those things don't hold much allure for children you son's age. He'd probably be too young to use them anyway.

Go and have fun. Don't worry. You'll love the Zuiderdam.

Blue skies ...

Thanks Rita. We are leaving on the 15th of December. I would assume some children will be on break at that time. There will be one other child in our group, and my son will certainly enjoy playing with his cousin!!! My hope was that they would have a few others to play along with them.

I really appreciate your encouraging words!

you will be sailing prior to Christmas break so no matter what line you choose there wouldn't be many kids, but there are always kids on about every cruise line. We were on a 10 day cruise (HAL) late Nov/early Dec last year and there were some kids sailing. No, HAL isn't the best for young ones, but all cruise lines have kids programs. I am sure he will be just fine. NMnita

I think the 15th of December is a bit early for Christmas break in most school districts, but as someone else said ... there will always be some kids on the sailing. And, your son is a pre-schooler ... so there will surely be other preschoolers on the cruise since Christmas break schedules for schools really don't affect them.

Any seven to ten day cruise is gonna get some kids. Even some of the longer ones draw at least a few kids. We had seven kids on my recent Veendam cruise ... an 18-day repositioning cruise from Tampa to Venice.

Your son should have a great time. Please be sure to get back on here after your cruise and let us know how it went. I, for one, would be really interested in knowing.

Blue skies ...

In all seriousness, if its very important to you that your 4 year old enjoy the cruise, I highly suggest you consider Disney over HAL. Just being honest.

Default Keeping the kiddo busy...

Then again my kiddo is a HAL regular since age 1....

Here's your itinerary with suggestions from experience. Just watch the time as the kiddo may tire in the heat. Lots of water shade and sunscreen of course.

Mon Dec 17 Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands 7:00am 2:00pm
Get kiddo a dive mask to see the little fishes in the potholes on either side of the cruise ship pier snorkeling area. Way cool schools of minnow sized fish.

Tue Dec 18 Tortola, British V.I. Noon 10:00pm
The baths (Virgin Gorda) might be cool and there are usually free ranging chickens to chase by the parking lot.

Wed Dec 19 St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands 7:00am 6:00pm
Coral World and the Island tour

Fri Dec 21 Half Moon Cay, Bahamas 8:00am 4:00pm
Kiddo water park is cool and there are reefballs (artificial fish habitat) straight out from the waterpark to the rope. Bring shovels to build sand castles and point out the curly-tailed lizards. Glass bottom boat trip.

Sat Dec 22 Fort Lauderdale, FL 7:00am
Lot's of aquariums in the airport to see.

Have fun!
