Default Stuck On Oosterdam

Our first cruise last August aboard MS Oosterdam from Seattle/Alaska was the best vacation my wife and I have ever enjoyed. We upgraded to a SA Suite and loved it. We thought the ship was beautiful and the crew excellent. We are both 55 years old and enjoyed all ages on-board the ship. We decided to book another cruise in november to Mexico and my wife thought we should try a different cruise line so we could compare. I read reviews for the other lines but kept coming back to Holland America. I do not knuw if I am just sentimemtally attached to the first time delemma or what. But I booked the Oosterdam again 11/15/08 to Mexico. What other lines would some of you experienced cruisers suggest? Both cruises are just 7 dayers but we will be able to book longer cruises in a couple of years. I hope I will try another line, but I do enjoy HAL so far.........Thanks

Every cruiser has good and bad experiences on every cruise line. If you had an enjoyable cruise then book again with that line. I have never personally been on HAL but have heard both good and bad about the line. We love Princess but others crusier don't. It's a personal preference and experience. We had a bad experinece on NCL and don't want to try it again but others like that cruise line. We have had good RCCL and will cruise again with that line. Compare prices, offerings, cabin availabity, intinerary, and even ship amenities (if you enjoy that) and then make a decision. One thing to remember that as you cruise you build up 'reward levels' on that line - as repeat customer - a loyality program. If that is important check out the websites for the cruise lines you are considering and see which one is the best offer for you. You have a great chance as just starting out to look at all the aspects. One reason we choose Princess was at that time they offered the intineraries in places we wanted to cruise - RCCL and HAL didn't go there. Although things have changed we are now at an Elite status on Princess so the perks are nice. Would we cruise on another line... absolutely... if the price, extras and interary was what we wanted.

I would say, just book the Oosterdam again. I personally started cruising last year and as you can see below I want to try all the bigger ones, and must tell you that HAL is still my favourite.

Default stuck on Oosterdam

Thanks for the advise. I see you are booked on Eurodam I am anxious to know what folks think about it. I beleive this ship is the new one. We did book Ms Oosterdam again in November to Mexico and are curios concerning excursions that anyone has tried in Cabo or Mazatlan or Puerto Val. What are the seas generaly like fron San Diego To Mexico and back in November? I hope calm weather will favor us. Thanks

Default Comparing HAL to others

We have several friends who have sailed Celebrity and thoroughly enjoyed that line. I have no personal experience. I have routinely heard HAL/Celebrity are a cut above Norwegian/Carnival/Royal Caribbean, particularly if you are not traveling with children. Having said that, in the upper reaches of cash outlay, Silversea, Crystal and a few others are well reputed. I would prefer to take HAL or Celebrity for 7 days more often I guess?

I am inclined to agree with your statement, but I put HAL ahead of Celebrity. There may have been a time when Celebrity has a little more upscale than now. I think the line is living more on reputation and actual product. Again, this is just my opinion.

We have 2 favorite lines and for totally different reasons. When we do want the refined atmosphere and a little more elegence we would choose HAL, when we want more energy, a more relaxed crew and more freedom of dining choices as well as more activities we opt for NCL.

Default HAL vs. X

Nita,
I'm pleased to hear you say that as you've obviously cruised more than we. It's our very first..for our 20th anniversary. Here's a question for you: We have a "guaranteed SY" and when I called HAL yesterday to make a one-night Pinnacle reservation, the man indicated "there was a possibility" we would be upgraded to an SS. Well...we chose the SY due to cabins above and cabins below...no buffet/lounge/entertainment areas.
Can one reject an upgrade? How does this go?
Thanks!
Jane

Hello, If you did not select a confirmed cabin and went with guarantee SY they do have the option of assigning you a cabin somewhere in that classification or offer the up-grade. I only can presume if you are up-graded to SS there should not be a bad cabin in that classification. I may be wrong because I am new to cruising. You have probably concidered the same logical conclusion. Have a wonderful time.

If you booked a guarantee in a SY category, and they move you UP to an SS category, I don't think you have the option of saying, "no thank you", because by the time they assign you your cabin, all the SY's' might be gone. We usually book a specific SY if we don't book an SA, for exactly the same reason you did - to me they are in a better location than the SS.

Back in 2000 we booked a specific cabin Cat. B on the Veendam - it was a cabin we had been in many times before at the aft section of the ship - very quiet back there. When we checked in at the desk at the pier, we were told that we had an upgrade - I was excited thinking it was to an S suite. Well, it was to an A cat (exactly same as a B but mid ship location). It was so noisy in that cabin from the music and the sound of the slot machines coming up the stairs from the Casino, that we finally had to complain and I don't know what they did, but the next night we didn't hear it. They didn't do us any favour that time.

You may want to phone HAL and tell them that you do not want an upgrade to an SS - you want to stay with the SY , if that's possible.

It's always best to book a specific cabin, but sometimes as you can see, it doesn't work.

Usually when I book the cabin I am asked "would you like to be considered for an upgrade" and I tell them "no thank you, unless it's to a Deluxe Suite" (SA). I'm very happy with what I book.

Default SY vs. SS / possible upgrade

Thanks for your (very valued!) input. I have sent a note to our TA here in town aprising her of my conversation with the HAL person. I'm confident she will answer early a.m. tomorrow and then, if there's doubt, I WILL be on the phone to HAL! We appreciate the thoughts of all of you, particularly since we are new at this!

Mountain Dog~~~I am so glad you enjoyed the "O". Our 1st cruise was HAL to Mexico, and we were hooked.

Our first choice for a cruise line is still HAL, but Mike enjoys golf cruises, which HAL doesn't provide on the West Coast.
Mike absolutely will not fly, so for golf cruises we have to take another cruise line.
Each cruise line has it's specific pluses, but for us HAL suits us.

In Cabo, we did the dolphin swim and loved it. (We are 59 and 61).

Default Oosterdam Mexico excursions

On one of the other cruise forum sites, I saw a very worthwhile post re Mexico excursions in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo. I will attempt to locate it (I printed it off for future use) and post the info. The 2 excursions mentioned sounded like something we would like to do and in addition, we plan on taking the "O" to Mexico...just don't know which year!!

mountain dog~~~let me know how that bird tour goes.

We are going back to Mexico in 2009 for another golf cruise on Carnival's new Splendor.
I don't golf, so I am looking for something I can do (I have some physical limitations).

Not sure how I will like thathugeship (3,000 passengers), but It's a new ship so I am excited for that.

dcsmac~~You mean the Zandaam cruise ?? That's great.

I will be meeting 2 other online friends, probably day 2 in the Crow's Nest.

One lady goes up there to knit. Her name is Phoeb. Mike just likes to hang around up there. You'll recognize him-----the silver haired guy doning nothing but staring at the empty sea.
I have reddish hair, and I wear glasses.

Hope to see you there.

Hi MD~~~Yes, we went to Mexico and Hawaii on the Statendam. I think she is older than the O, but I think the O is bigger.

It's been almost 3 yrs. though, so things may have changed, but we loved her. Back then, HAL had all these huge, beautiful floral arrangements throughut the ship. There were some artifacts displayed, such as a cannon from the 1600's.
And, of course, all the Explorations updates should have beeen done.

HAL's product seems to be pretty consistant throughout the fleet. Even though they are the same class, I preferred Statendam over Ryndam. Don't remember why.

I can't help you about the O, but I know alot of people love her.

Default Statendam

Thanks Pat, We have sailed Oosterdam and really enjoyed it. Thank you for your input on Statendam. WE booked a BA Suite on the upcoming cruise in August on Statendam and were just wondering how people think concerning the attitudes of these two ships. Thanks again SassyRedhead.

Statendam is definitely older and much smaller than the O - she was the first of the S class ships. S class came first, then R class, then Vista.

I haven't been on her in quite a while, but we enjoyed sailing on her, in fact did the Hawaii cruise on her back in '97.

A BA suite is very nice - smaller than an SS/SY suite on the Vista ships, but much larger than the V class (VA/VB, etc) cabins. You will have a Jacuzzi tub, but let me warn you, it's small (short) so you can't stretch out in it.

The only problem with the S class ships, is that they only have 2 sets of elevators. When they built the R class, they added the centre set of elevators.

Enjoy, and have a great time, MD.
