Default St. Maartin Car or Taxis Rental?

My husband and I are experiencing our first time cruising this upcoming April 24th to May 4th on the Maasdam. The first port is St. Maartin. The shore excursion we wanted will not be available due to it being a Sunday. Will Marigot and Grand Case be open and what are your thoughts about renting a car as to using the Taxis to travel the entire island?
Thanks
Laurie

As this is your first time on the island, I would suggest using a taxi to tour the island. I understand the island is easy to navigate, but I'd hate for you to get lost and miss the ship. There will be plenty of taxis at the dock - haggle with the drivers and I am sure you can get a good price.

Have no idea if Marigot will be open on a Sunday. We haven't gone over there in a long time - found the sales people in the stores very snooty!!

Are there any other areas that would be of interest to visit while in St. Maartin/Martin?

Hi my wife and I have always rented a car. The Island is not that large. You can drive it and not get lost. You also have the ability to stop and go as you please. The people are friendly and you can make your own itinerary. The cost is not that bad. If you want you could probably get another couple to go in with you as alot of people like to go on their own. I do recomend going to the French side. The beaches are nice and you can see the Island of Anguilla. Have a beer and dive for conch shells. Of course we always leave them on the beach behind when we leave. But the main thing is to have a good time whatever you decide to do. St. Marteen is one of my favorite Islands and they have what I believe is the best shopping in the Caribbean.

St Martin is the best! Great beach bars, beer for a buck and the best shopping I've seen. The beaches are out of this world. We are going in November and can't wait! Have fun.

Default St. Maarten

I think getting a taxi is best.

If anyone has been to the Marine Park there and knows if one can snorkel please let me know if it's any good. Thanks.

Default French Side

We took a taxi to the a beautiful beach on the French side. They had a great restaurant, some little shops and a bar on the beach.

Um, the only thing was, it was a totally NUDE beach. Oops........We had a great time, even with our bathing suits on. Its was a little weird ordering a cold beer from a topless bartender. The taxis are cheap and there are always other couples looking to share. HAVE FUN!

We really enjoyed STM. We took a taxi out to the Sunset Beach bar http://www.sunsetbeachbar.com

We arrived at 830am and stayed til about 1pm.

There is a nice patio/porch where they serve food and drinks.

If you are into airplanes this is THE place to go. It is just at the runway for the airport. Planes are approaching over the water and over your head !! Not many mind you, not so it is a bad thing. There were maybe 5 while we were there.

Here is an example of the planes..at the very end of the video is the plane going by....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlnE4...eature=related

The taxi driver said traffic gets a bit crazy sometimes at around lunchtime and again around 3pm.

HTH
