Just back from Statendam Panama Canal-Any Questions?

Hi! I will be posting my review soon but in the meantime, if anyone has any question regarding the Statendam or the Panama Canal Cruise, please post!

IT WAS GREAT!!!!

Did you take the shore excursion to Machu Picchu? If so, please share your thoughts on this very exciting, but very expensive, tour.

CanadianCruiseBooker February 24th, 2009 09:07 AM

Sorry, no, that tour was not offered on the Panama Canal Cruise... usually offered on South America pre or post tours not on Panama Canal itineraries unless I am mistaken... I CAN tell you however that it is worth EVERY penny on the South America itineraries!!

I'll be looking for that review, and will get it up online as soon as I receive it.

Was Theo Haanan your hotel manager? Was his lovely wife, Helen, onboard as well?

Also, was smoking permitted in the Ocean Bar? I've heard that has been discontinued on some HAL ships.

Blue skies and welcome home!

I did not meet Theo but I believe he is still the Hotel Manager. It was actually a little disappointing that not one person from HAL met with me or greeted me... as a travel agent (and a tour leader), I would have expected SOME greeting or welcome aboard.

I did not see (or smell) anyone smoking in the Ocean Bar... only in the Casino Bar.

I filled out a questionaire on the last day of the cruise asking if I would like to see no smoking in staterooms or even a smoke free ship.

It may take me a few days longer... off to Vancouver for our national awards ceremonies... what a jet setter...lol

Disappointing if there is no smoking in the Ocean Bar anymore. That was one of my favorite hangouts. Guess it will be the Crow's Nest in the future for me. :(

That is strange that no one greeted you personally. I know group leaders on my cruise were accorded certain, shall we say, "courtesies." In fact, a group of them were asked to pose for a photo on World's Largest Cruise Night at a celebration that was held onboard. Are you sure they knew you were a group leader? ... though if not, they certainly should have.

Blue skies ...

Yes, they knew... the agency owner was on the phone with our HAL regional manager 2 days before my cruise and mentioned that I was leaving for my first HAL cruise as a group leader AND I had to sign a paper upon embarkation that I promise not to solicite business while on board. No biggy, it IS going to be a factor in my next escorted group plans... I am waiting for the June 2010 Baltic itineraries to come out... I might need to go with Oceania or Princess... on Princess I receive all sorts of perks that no other cruiseline offers... I guess a bottle of wine or a plate of strawberries with a greeting would have been nice.

I just double checked the liturature and no smoking in the Ocean Bar... only Casino Bar and Crow's Nest... indoors anyways. Crow's Nest smoking only only on the Starboard side.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to adopt a new hangout in October ... the Crow's Nest. Shame. I really liked the Ocean Bar too. :(

Machu Pichu tour

Do not pass up Machu Picchu. It is an amazing place. You will not regret paying the price if it is indeed something you are interested in seeing.
I cannot convey the intensity of visiting it. It is special.

What times were the evening shows (7 & 9 or 8 & 10)? Are there tray in the Lido? How were the movies?

CanadianCruiseBooker March 9th, 2009 10:37 AM

Shows were at 7 and 9 ...

I did not go to any of the movies but there seemed to be some decent ones showing.

Lido had trays. Unlike the Westerdam, this Lido is still on one big buffet line.

Rita -- just off the Eurodam and there was NO smoking in the Crow's Nest. I wouldn't be surprised to see NO smoking inside any part of the ships in the near future.

The only place you could smoke was the Sports Bar and Casino. I am a smoker myself (trying to quit), but the stench from the smoke, even as you walked down past the Queen's Lounge to the Casino was awful.

Only place to smoke outside was the starboard side at the aft pool. People were also smoking at the Sea View Bar.

I think the time is drawing near where they will prohibit smoking in the cabins and verandahs.

Sad to report that, apparantly, effective May 1st., 2009, trays will be eliminated in the Lido Buffet onboard all HAL ships![/i][/b]

And it cannot come soon enough!!! Celebrity, to their credit, eliminated smoking in all their staterooms and verandahs, effective October 1st., 2008!!!
