Default Haines or Skagway?

Hello, it's me again with another query. On our Glacier Discovery itinery we visit Skagway when sailing northbound, and Haines when sailing southbound. On a HAL map Haines is Skagway. I am confused.[/b]

Haines and Skagway are about 40 miles apart.
A map would have a problem separating them

Skagway is a better port then Haines. It's a bigger town and has more
to do if you don't take a tour.

Check out this map and it will give you a better idea where the 2 ports are.

I have been to both Haines and Skagway. For a repeat visit, it’s no contest, I would pick Haines. We enjoyed walking around Haines, (don’t miss the hammer museum) and had a great jet boat river trip. Skagway is a tourist trap.

I couldn't disagree more. Skagway has the rail trip up the canyon to White Pass Yukon, one of the most fantastic excursions we have ever taken anywhere in the world (provided the weather is semi cooperative.) It is not to be missed by anyone who loves spectacular scenery. If you take only one excursion on the entire cruise, that is the one.
Bon voyage.

I totally agree with you. The day we took the rail trip was the best excursion we have taken on our 3-4 trips to Alaska. Friends who just got off one of the ships the beginning of May, did the excursion and they still had snow up in the mountains and he said it was spectacular. There are so many excursions out of Skagway that you could go back there time and time again.
