David,

I won't be on that cruise but Barcelona is one of my favorite cities.

The best result I have had with hotels is using Priceline. I did this for our February '09 Mediterranean cruise. I bid 5* and got the Eurostar Grand Marina for $90/night. It is right at the end of Las Ramblas and on the harbor.

In 2003 I stayed at the Barcelo Sants Hotel. It is not in the Las Ramblas area but it is directly over the Sants train station and gave easy access to anywhere. The station is well below ground and the hotel is quite modern. The Tourista bus stops right out side the hotel entrance so it was very easy to get around Barcelona.

The Tourista bus is the best way to get around. $12 euros/day allows unlimited off and on and it travels all around the city to all the major districts, including the Gothic district and right by the Sagrada Familia.

One of the most enjoyable things to do is to take a walk down Las Ramblas and enjoy the restaurants and the shops. If you walk one or two blocks off of Las Ramblas you will find some wonderful restaurants for less money than you will spend on Las Ramblas. I do caution that there are a number of pick-pockets around, on and off Las Ramblas,so watch take precautions with your money. If you are bumped by "anyone", including children, check to make sure you haven't been picked. I don't want to scare anyone but it's always a good idea to pay attention. I have not been pick-pocketed but one of our fellow cruise passengers was.

The Picasso museum is a great way see some wonderful artwork. There are also MANY museums, i.e. Gaudi.

I also recommend, if you can navigate the trains, to take the one hour trip to Montserrat. It is a beautiful Monastery on the mountain and has great views.

I do have to say that the most enjoyable thing I love to do in Barcelona is just grab a pastry and a coffee and sit at an outdoor table or a bench in a "Placa" or square. Placa Catalunya, at the end of Las Ramblas is a good place to do this.

Enjoy your cruise and your time in Barcelona.

Take care,
Mike

You can also take the train to Montserrat and enjoy the village and the evening light show.
