Has anyone else had a problem with Holland America hotel fares? I recently took a 11 day land/sea cruise with HAL. We were charged $300 for a one night stay in Anchorage. HAL refuses to make any adjustment. It was billed as an excursion (per person) rather than the custom of 2 people in one room. I feel ripped off!!
The one time we took a hotel through HAL in New York City prior to a cruise, it was very expensive as they charged "per person" for the room. - that also included transfers from the airport to the hotel and to the ship.
The next time we stayed overnight prior to the cruise we booked our own hotel room, taking a taxi to hotel and to the ship and it was much cheaper.

This is the standard mode for pre-post cruise hotels that are booked through the cruise line. I have always found that you can do MUCH better on your own. The "per-person" charges are ridiculous.
Last year we booked our own pre-cruise hotel in Barcelona at the Eurostar Marina for under $100 total. NCL wanted $275 per person.
The only thing is that you should have been informed and aware of the charge when you booked. Were you not told of the charges?
Take care,
Mike

For next year's Canada/ New England cruise, I'm using HAL's Montreal hotel package. I guess I'll find out for myself rather it is a suitable idea or not . The thing is ....with mercurial airlines now-days, I just can NOT completely trust the airlines to rush me to homeport in time. They might get one there on time or they might just strand one in Atlanta over-night. I almost missed my ship last year due to flight delays. Not again !!
I know ! I know ! Some of you book your own hotel and save $$, but I attempted that a few year's back and had transportation issues. Also.... The hotel was inexpensive, but was also a dump.
According to HAL, for $200 for there WILL be a bus/van to pick me up at the airport and take me to the Delta in Montreal. They promised that this Delta hotel is pleasant, then the next morning the bus will pick me up at the hotel and take me to the ship. Sounds good to me.

I've always booked the hotel myself due the outragous price charged by a cruise line (an the fact they are usually airport hotels away from anything to do). I research on here and the other board what hotel the cruise line uses and see what I'd pay booking it myself - it's usually half of what the cruise line is charging per person! Also, when booking a hotel, check the cancellation policy and if you can cancel before arrival, keep checking the prices on a weekly basis. I've more than once found the price has dropped closer to my departure and then booked another room at the new rate then canceled the original room. I did this recently at the Holiday Inn in San Diego and saved $40 for the same room. It pays to keep checking.
You can book your own hotel room, pay for all your transportation needs, and still have money left over for your first few hands of blackjack in the casino for what the cruise lines charge for rooms.
