I am booked on HAL's Amsterdam Grand Voyage around the world departing from Ft Lauderdale On Jan 5th. I am most interested in taking an excursion to Machu Picchu but I'm finding HAL's prices out of my budget. Has anyone else on this tour already booked with a private tour company, could you provide me with the information?
I am pretty sure Mike M from our CruiseMates staff has been there.
You know it is a long way from the ship - your HAL price may not be as bad as you think. I suggest you Google outside tour guides for Macchu Picchu and see about what it costs.
There are a lot of "Logistics" in getting there, and at least with the ship's tour you won't be left behind.

I am the editor, but I also speculate, ask questions and play devil's advocate. I reserve the right to change my mind.
Two years ago on HAL’s “Inca Discovery” cruise, we did the Machu Picchu tour. After getting over the “sticker shock”, we did the “superior” rather than the “standard”. It was worth the extra cost.
The logistics are formidable, and the schedule is tight. I would use a private tour only if it is a pre or post cruise tour. By the way, it looks like you folks on the world cruise get four days and three nights for about what we paid for three days and two nights. (On the Inca Discovery cruise we got off and on at Lima.)
We noticed that HAL charged less for a pre or post cruise tour than the mid-cruise tour that we were on. The only explanation for this inconsistent pricing is competition from private tour companies.
It is an extraordinary, breathtaking experience of a lifetime. Don’t miss it!
