I think HAL should prohibit smoking on verandas and cabins but should provide for one location inside the ship (Sport's Bar on ships that have one) and one or two locations outside where smoking is permitted.
I don't care if they continue allowing it in casino. They lost us long ago and once the 'pattern' of stopping in casino after dinner is lost, it is very hard to get us back to the slot machines. It used to be fun but the smokers chased us out and we've lost interest. While they've continued to lose their money and spend hundreds/thousands on cigarettes, we've been saving all that money.
I have no interest in getting into conversation about pro and con. This is my position and there is nothing that hasn't already been said through the years to change my mind. Nor am I apt to change anyone else's. (This, of course, a reference to the other smoking thread currently on the thread list.)

You are right, there has been much discussion already. This is hopefully just a simple poll to show how people feel. If anybody wants to discuss again, go to the other thread.
And to be sure we 'focus on the subject of this thread' , we should also have a poll on whether people should stop using perfume and other scented products.
It's always so interesting to see how people pull non-related issues into the conversation.
Did you hear the report yesterday that 600,000 people died last year from second hand smoke related illnesses?
If you start a poll, there is every reason to think you are encouraging conversation. No?
You just want a simple Yes or No about such a controversial subject? I know you have to be kidding.
Well, NO.
Actually, you see, there is a very active thread on this board, usually within a couple of posts of this one, which is full of discussion on this topic.
In THAT thread, somebody posted a hope that there would be a poll on the subject. So, being in the process of learning how this board works, I figured out how to post a poll. The naive hope was that the poll would stand as a down and dirty yes or no count, and the discussion of the many different ramifications of the subject could continue on the other thread.
Didn't work, did it? Now we have TWO threads on this topic ...
The thread on smoking on HAL has been interesting. Somebody there requested a poll, so I am trying to learn how to post one. Hope this works.
Thank you for posting the poll. I would love to see a policy that mirrors Celebrity. Smoke free would be best but we all know that is not going to happen. And, I am the one who requested a poll. Thank you MercedMike
Guess what? They actually had a poll on the ship which they requested everyone fill out and return with their cruise survey and they asked about smoking policies. Maybe something will come out of it; time will only tell. We noticed smoking more in the casino and sports bar, but the rest of the ship stayed pretty much smoke (and odor) free.

they gave us one too, in May 2009 and they still haven't done anything.

HMMM. Perhaps because the poll revealed that most of the passengers don't care about the subject??
We post polls for fun. The results are ... erratic ... at best. Market researchers doing it for major companies have very sophisticated methods of analysis of large samples (my daughter did it for some years.) I am sure that if the poll HAL took showed any great interest in more restrictive smoking rules, they would have been quickly put in place.
Evidently the vocal non-smokers were not reflected in the large scale survey results.

I hope you're right. I'd hate to think they're getting the feedback to change and electing to drag their heels.
