If you want to be right by the pier you may want to stay at the Wyndham Old San Juan. You can walk through the town, visit the 2 forts near by, check our the pier. There is also a large casino right in the hotel. Its very convient, expecially if you are cruising the next day. The only problem we had there was the help in the restaurant, very slow, unless you opt for the breakfast buffet, no problem there.
There are restaurants walking distance from the hotel, even a Hooters :-) It takes about half an hour drive from the airport and depending on which cruiseline you're cruising on, a lot are right across the street. We were cruising on Princess, which required grabbing a cab, short ride over to their pier, but definately not walkable. Take care.
Has anyone heard of the Ramada in Condado? It has a 2 star rating and for us seniors in Jan the rate is $146/night. A lot less than anything else I could find. Especially since we don't arrive til 9:30 the night before.
The Caribe Hilton is nice. Stayed there in April and renovations were not quite finished. It was still quite nice. My sister is staying there in 3 weeks and they have a special rate of $150.00 a night. That rate may be going on for a while.
Donna, how are the rooms in the Wyndham old SJ, we are booked for two nights prior to our xmas cruise, booked through Princess. Will our luggage go with us to the hotel and should we delay putting our cruise tags on them till after arriving in PR, what are the prices like in the hotel for b/fast buffet, dinner etc and does Princess transport us to the ship, sorry for all the ???s but first time with Princess, thanx, jean.
Because we did a pre-cruise, which we booked the hotel on our own, we didn't get the Princess transfers going down. That meant we needed to pick up our own luggage and take it, which I wanted to do anyway. We didn't put the Princess tags on until we were leaving the hotel. The rooms there are your typical hotel room, no problems at all. There is a small pool up on the roof, which you can watch the pier, really nice. The only main problem, they seemed to need some better help in the dinning room, we had breakfast there the day we cruised and it took forever. There was also a nice buffet and if you have that you can go ahead and eat right away, but it took about 20 minutes just to get a menu for breakfast because I wasn't really up to all that food first thing in the AM. Everything else in the hotel was really nice, big casino! There are plenty of other restaurants walking distance from the hotel if you want to take a walk. We then took a cab for $10.00 over to the pier and were able to embark in about 3 minutes, no lines and beat the bus loads of people. Any other questions, freel free to post again or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org
thanks so much Donna, thats a help, Even though we have transfers, I think I might just go ahead and catch a cab, can`t stand all the bus crowds!!(been there, done that!!) now, who do we give our bags to on arriving at the ship? and what time can we board? thanks again, jean.
As soon as you get to the pier, there are porters there to take your bags on board. Just make sure you have the cruise tags on everything they take, along with your cabin number and also a few bucks tip :-) We were able to board at around 1PM, caught lunch and were out at the pool soon after, much nicer than flying in the day of the cruise, enjoy.
