I heard that the Sheraton overlooks the port. We are using miles and staying at the Hilton/San Pedro, which is right on a marina, next to the port, but I don't know if the ships are visible from the Hilton.........have heard that they are from the Sheraton.
We stayed at the San Pedro Hilton ($45 on Priceline) and thought it was great. Just ask when you check in for a view of the harbor and you can watch your ship come in. The rooms were clean and the area was safe to take a walk in.
Personally, I might be inclined to stay by the waterfront in Long Beach. It's a fairly short straight shot from there to San Pedro, and it's kind of a neat little area, with shops and restaurants by the water in easy walking distance. I've stayed in the Hyatt there a couple of times, and the Marriott is also nice.

I would suggest getting out of San Pedro as well, unless you do not plan on leaving your hotel. San Pedro can be pretty dangerous and has more prison halfway houses than any other Californian city. Beware.
