Need help ... Miami hotel or South Beach

The kids want to stay on the beach (looking at Best Western, South Beach), but I read on the boards about so many people liking the Hyatt downtown. Can anyone tell me how far it is from South Beach to the port? Suggestion on either would be appreciated.

Thanks for asking this question...I'm "in the same boat" you are. Have kids, would like to stay on the beach but keep seeing the downtown hotels. Can you taxi to the beach without too much trouble? Anyone out there that can help?
