Default hotel in New York - airport or pier?

We may not even need to stay in a hotel (I'm voting no) but we'll need to see how the flights work out. We're certainly not willing to cut it close. Anyway, is it smarter, cheaper, easier, whatever, to stay near
La Guardia or get close to the pier when sailing out of New York in January? Thanks much~

I live in NYC and Laguardia isn't far (maybe 30 minutes without traffic) but it all depends. The airport hotels are definitely cheaper but not too convenient if you plan to see the sights before going on your cruise. If you don't mind taking cabs into Manhattan then go for it.

By the way, there's always traffic in NYC.

We are arrivin in new York on the 15th December and staying at the Millennium Hilton for 3 nights and after the cruise we are staying at the Jolly Maddison for 4 night to bring in the new Yeat in Time Square. we are looking forward to our cruise on the spirit. We have cruised beofre and done the Med with Celebrity and went on the millenium which was great. I am looking forward to the cruise as it is freestyle and different. Anyone else going on the 18th December 05?

Stay in the city if you can and have some fun. We stayed at the Marriott Marquis (a splurge)at Times Square for one night pre-cruise. I could actually see my ship from my hotel room on the 26th floor. We also stayed post-cruise at The Excelsior right beside the Museum of Natural History. It was about a 10 minute cab ride, was a beautiful small hotel and was very convenient to long walks in the park (had to work off that cruise food), a visit to the museum and the upper west side in general.
