Be glad to share with you what was shared when we went to Barcelona pre-cruise...http://www1.dragonet.es/users/d5506/ we used Auriello as a taxi cab and a guide...he grew up outside of NYC. As for the hotel annother recommondation was the Hotel Continental on The Ramblas..found many cruisers and backpackers there.. It';s clean, safe, and includes a continental breakfast in the common room, free internet and refreshmentrs and drinks agratis all day long. If you want more info please
I have stayed at the Le Meridien and the Barcelo Sants. Le Meridien is on La Ramblas and is a nice older hotel that is convenient to the pier and to the major sites.
The Sants is a more modern, but more western, hotel that is very transportation friendly. It's right on the main rail station. It is also a main stopping point on the Tourista Bus that goes around Barcelona. A taxi to the pier will run you about 15 to 20 euros.
In regard to transportation from the airport I would do a cab. In 2002 it was around 35 euros to the Sants. I did not inquire about a bus or other transfer.
Mike (I do recommend the Tourista Bus for sightseeing)

Parrot Mom and MikeM: I really appreciate the time you both gave to my request for information.
Parrot Mom: Thanks for the info on the taxi service. I checked the website and it looks very promising.
Thanks for the hotel suggestions and the advice about using the Tourista Bus. From what I've been able to learn it sounds a lot like a line in Berlin that stops at most of the tourist spots allowing one to hop off, look around, and hop back on a later bus. As this is will be my first trip to Barcelona I am fairly certain this will be my first official tourist activity.
My hotel choice has narrowed (for now ) to the Barcelona Universal and the Barcelona Princess based on glowing reports from several people here who have stayed at one or the other. I hope I just don't wind up flipping a coin to decide....
