Default Miami Hotels, close to port or not? rent a car?

Searched a few threads here but kinda confusing and not real good data for my situation. I would like some advise.

I'm flying into Miami on October 6th in the afternoon, and not getting on valor until October 8th. I was considering renting car but not sure what to see in a day and a half. I'd probably be happy with a mall and a beach. Weighing out car rental prices, hotel prices and location, and level of difficulty driving around a city I know nothing about (Don't want to get into a car accident in confusing traffic) What would you recomend I do, and where to stay?

Thanx,
Krunch

There is a Holiday Inn on Biscayne Blvd. in Miami where a lot of cruise passengers stay pre-cruise. It is a 5 minute ride over the causeway to the cruise ship piers from the hotel. Directly across the street from the Holiday Inn is Bayside Marketplace, lots of shops, restaurants, etc. Another nice thing to see that is also a 5 minute drive from the hotel is Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a magnificent winter home built by John Deering (VP of International Harvester) in the early 1900's. The home is a National Historic Landmark and is open every day for tours of the home and beautiful gardens. Forget about South Beach and over-priced restaurants and phony people, in my opinion, Vizcaya is one of the best attractions to see in Miami. Miami Beach is only a few minutes away if you enjoy the beach. If you rent a car and want to expand your horizons, it is an easy ride to Key Largo where there are lots of good seafood restaurants and the drive to the Keys is beautiful. Also, if you head north to Hollywood, FL (approx. 30 minute ride), you can spend an entire day at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Yes, it seems like the perfect place, only problem is the rates I am finding for that hotel are $179.00 per night. That's almost double what I wanted to spend. (October 6-8/06) Is this right?

Thanx,

Yikes....well, there are lots of hotels at the airport that should be a lot less. If you look on South Beach, the prices will be even higher. Do a search on hotels.com, they seem to have good prices and the web site is easy to navigate.

Try http://www.hotelscorp.com
or www.hotwire.com then check www.biddingfortravel.com to see what hotels you get with the star rating.

** UPDATE **

Thanx for the info Kuki, but I found that priceline.com didn't seem all that attractive for the way they ran their site. I took your advise on bidding and failed 2 days in a row. Plus I had me and my girlfriend bidding under different unsernames. My LAST bid was for $86, and priceline's reply was, "Bid another $22.00 and we could try again for a 3 star. So that would have been $108.00

Well, I went to hotwire.com, got a 4 STAR hotel, for a buy it now of $105 per night! So too bad priceline, thank-you hotwire!

I'm staying at the Intercontinental Miami, seems real close to the market. Go to the Intercontinental website and their rates start @ $225.00 for 2 adults. I got it for less than 1/2, and now upgraded to a 4-Star. I spent a little more than I wanted to, but I'm happy.

Glad it worked out for you. Intecontinental is a great hotel. Stayed there several times. Staying there again in Dec. prior to our New Years cruise... got it for $100/night on Priceline
