If you want to treat yourself to a truly memorable dinner, you can go to The Capital Grille on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The cocktails are wonderful, beautiful decor, fabulous food and great service. A little pricey but, hey, it's your birthday. There are lots of fun bars and restaurants on the Fort Lauderdale beach strip which is 5 minutes from The Capital Grille. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is o.k., a fun place to walk around but it can get very crowded. Another good restaurant on 17th Street Causeway is Bimini Boatyard. There is also a great old fashioned ice cream parlor on A1A in Dania that makes all their own ice creams and toppings. Also, Mangos restaurant on Las Olas Blvd. is supposed to be very good and there are all kinds of shops and bars along this stretch of Las Olas including an Irish pub which was lots of fun.
Mangos is both very good and very affordable. I've been there several times. Most of the places on Los Olas are very expensive. Mangos is a very nice find amongst all of those places. If you're going to be there on a weekend night, it is crowded all over Los Olas Blvd., and parking can be a bit of a bear. Taxis are plentiful.
If you have time to treat yourself to breakfast on the beach, there is a wonderful cafe right on the beach called Cafe del Mar. There is both inside and sidewalk seating. I always opt for a sidewalk table to enjoy the scenery of the beach in the morning. The buckwheat pancakes...awesome! I've been here a lot - it's the only place I have breakfast when I'm in Fort Lauderdale.
