Does anyone know of a good hotel in Miami for pre and post cruise. There will be 4 of us and we are looking for a hotel near the port or that has transportation to the port as we won't have a car. We have heard there are some unsafe areas and we aren't familiar with Miami so don't know where to stay. We will also need a grocery or somewhere to buy some things to take with us. Any help is greatly appreciated.

We (family of four as well) just got back from Miami before our cruise in January. We stayed at the Doubletree Grand and would highly recommend it. It was wonderful! The sunrise over the marina in the morning was to die for! When I got up in the morning I saw our ship had come in at night, right there, just across the bridge from us! You can take the free city tranportation all around the city! It is only a short block away to catch the "train". We took it down to the water front and ate at Bubba Gump's for dinner the night before the cruise. There are a few places to eat in the hotel but they are a little pricey as is most of Miami. There is a store in the lobby to buy things but they were the same prices on the ship! The hotel will call for a cab for you if you ask at the desk. It was $11 from the hotel to the dock. $21 from the airport to the hotel. Hope that helps!
Stayed at Best Western Bayside hotel a couple of cruises. Walk across the street to the entrance of Bayside indoor/outdoor mall. Great scenery and you can see the ships from the top floor of the hotel. Have to take an inexpensive taxi ride to the ship. This hotel is the nicest Best Western I've seen (not your typical BW).
I can offer one place NOT to stay and that is the Radisson. We were booked there through RCL and although the hotel is very nice, the view of the ships was breathtaking... the neighborhood was the pits. We were instructed not to leave anything in our car because of the high crime rate in the area. We walked across the street to get Burger King and witnessed two young boys stealing bikes out front... we went back to the hotel and didn't venture out again until we left for the ship the next day.
