Default Hotel in vancouver: close to port or airport?

I have been doing some research into where to stay in Vancouver the night before our alaska cruise in May '08. It seems that there are a good number of choices. My first question is should we stay close to the Airport or close to the ship port, or somewhere between. And second, has anyone stayed at a good moderately priced ($100-$150) hotel/motel in the area that they would recomend?

ps.
We are a group of 4 middle aged adults on a vacation budget.

ps2.
We will be arriving early enough to get some dinner and maybe a little sightseeing too. any advice?

I haven't been to Vancouver for quite some years, but I do know that Canada Place is in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Canada Place is literally steps away from Gastown--a place almost all tourists go for ye olde town like setting. Chinatown is also very close to Canada Place. If you have Google Earth do a check and see what hotels are around Canada Place. The price may be higher because of the downtown core area. I also have to warn you that there might be some homeless problem and such in/around that area as well. Every city has their share of the problem and most of the homeless are aboriginals (native indians). I think they are working on the problem because of the 2010 Winter Olympic but you can always expect some homeless people wandering and street panhandlers...

Vancouver is a very beautiful city, alas, I haven't been able to make it out there since Expo 86....ya 22 years....*sigh*....I would like to go for the 2010 games, but the price of a hotel will be outrageous!

Hi,

We are sailing in September out of Vancouver and we booked a condo near everything for a reasonable amount.

I would just advise you get everything in writting and use Paypal type method if available.

I'm going to PM you with details I cannot post due to the advertising rules here but an example of what you can find aside from hotels...

Default Hotel

Stay downtown, the airport is way out and there is nothing out there. All major hotels downtown are only a short cab ride to the terminal.

We will be cruising May 21 on the Ryndam and also a group of 4 adults.
This will be our 4th north to Alaska cruise from Vancouver. There are no downtown hotels under $150 for 4 adults. We have stayed at 2 different B & B's (great fun) & at the Days Inn downtown on Pender. Friends have stayed at the Ramada Limited Downtown also on Pender for under $200.00. The neighborhood is on the edge of iffy but within walking distance to Steamworks & other good restaurants ( it also serves breakfast). We are most likely staying again at the Days Inn because of the free shuttle to the cruise pier. We have a favorite tea spot for a light breakfast (& you are not going to be hungry once on board). So look at reviews on travel websites. Both of these are old established hotels with small rooms. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you so much for the information. Several people have mentioned the Days Inn so I think that may be a strong posibility. I am interested in the B&Bs. They are always a lot of fun. What type of price range where the ones that you chose and how close to the port. Also, How much will taxi fare be between the airport and downtown? Again thank you all for great replies.

Dear Artikfl,
Our first B & B 2001 in Vancouver was east of Chinatown on Union St. We chose it for being on a bike trail so thought it would be safe for walking & experiencing Canada. There we walked to PanCoast to take the ferry to Buchart Gardens. There was also a wonderful gelato place that everyone seemed to be going to. The cost then for the 1898 Victorian was under $100.00 for two/simple house with shared bath for all/met great people. In 2006, we stayed at the West End Guest House on Haro St because it was close to Stanley Park & Robson St. It also had bikes for us to ride. (A couple at the 2001 B & B told us how much fun it was to bike the sea wall around the park). We were saddened by the damage the Dec. 2006 storm caused to the park Anyway-the cost was around $200-300 for 2 nights. Since we needed to pick up our 3 friends at the Ramada + luggage we hired a stretch limo to take us to Canada Place. You can find taxi/van rates on any of the Vancouver tourism web sites. Let me know if this helped.
