Default Venice, Italy

My wife and I are taking our first Med Cruise this upcoming September and flying into Venice the day before. I have been asking friends, co-workers and searching the web for a good hotel to spend one night prior to boarding.
Very confused with all the suggestions and the very high prices.

We are a couple in our 40's and in good shape so bridges, etc aren't an issue. I have read about watching everyone in Venice with their luggage, and we obviously don't want to do that.

I have made a "tentative" booking at the Olimpia Hotel (Best Western) which seems ok, but extremely expensive for just one night-

I don't mind paying 400 Euros- just wanted to know if anybody had any good suggestions. Seems like the posts here are old, and wanted to start something more recent.

Thanks

Wow 400 € seems like a lot for one night at a best western, even in Venice. We stayed at a Westin property close to San Marco and on the Grand Canal for about $450. It was a couple of years ago but it was also June. The trick is to minimize the number of bridges between your hotel and where you hit the island. A private water taxi might cut this to zero but will come at a cost, about 100€.

Thanks for replying. I checked out the Westin First- I guess a couple years makes a difference or perhaps it's just this particular weekend in September because they are asking 610 euros for the one night- which is crazy.

That sounds high to me, also.

I've seen rates better than that - just have to do some shopping around. Keep in mind that in Europe, AARP often gets better rates than AAA, as an example. And September is an excellent time to go.

Personally, we like to stay in B&B, having stayed there 3 times. We really like the Campiello Zen. Very nice! But there are many wonderful B&B from which to choose.

If money becomes an issue, you can always stay on the mainland and then take the train onto the island. There are some relatively cheap alternatives.

Default just stayed at bw olimpia in may 2 nights

I got a good rate on their FB page. would not pay over $200 a night. Nice place breakfast was excellent. Near all the vaporettos, PeopleMover, COOP and bus station from the airport. other choice would be Santa Chiara stayed there one night on points. It had a larger room but breakfast not as good, very well situated to access canal, etc.
