Hurricane season is upon us. It officially began June 1, and runs through November, though the peak usually occurs in October.
This year's hurricane season activity was predicted to be "normal" or "average", but of course there are no predictors to determine what the veracity will be of hurricanes that do appear.
From a cruise passenger's perspective the most important thing to know when considering a cruise during this season is that ship's do move faster than hurricanes.
We were on the Zuiderdam, on a western itinerary, in November, when we learned a hurricane was coming across Florida, from the west, which is unusual. The ship filled up with more fuel in one port, which meant us missing one port, & the thinking was we would stay at sea.....It then was like a race with the ship, and, the hurricane..who would get to Florida first. we won,and made it home before it struck. We always felt safe, and, the precautions were in place, a comforting thought.

Actually, according to NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association), the hurricane season goes from June 1 to November 30, with the main season being from August 15th - October 20th and the top of the peak at September 10th.
